Lady M Confections @ Orchard Central

Lady M Confections

I was on my way to the spa some weeks back when I spotted Lady M at Orchard Central and just had to come back for a pampering pre-dinner treat.

Lady M Confections

If you have a sweet tooth, you’re probably already very familiar with the brand. Hailing from New York, Lady M is often known as the pioneer of the mille crepe which is a French cake that comes with multiple layers of paper thin crepes filled with pastry cream in between. Sounds mouthwatering, doesn’t it?

Lady M Confections

They opened their first outlet in Singapore at Marina Square about one and a half years ago (but it is now closed) and there would always be long queues of patrons ready to dig into their signature mille crepes any time of the day.

Comparing with their predecessor, this boutique outlet looked so much more classy and chic as it occupied a prime duplex storefront with a mezzanine floor which was formerly inhabited by the Boutique & Parlour by Ashley Isham. And I loved the booth seats that were located on the left hand side from where I was standing while taking the above shot, just next to the window so I could watch the people and traffic go by as I enjoyed my me-time.

It was too difficult a decision to just settle on one of these beautiful creations so I ordered two. And I was so glad I did 🙂

The Green Tea Mille Crepes ($9.00) might look plain and boring in appearance…

…but it was like the BEST mille crepes ever. Constructed with 20 layers of crepes which were just so light and airy and the Japanese style pastry cream sandwiched between the crepes tasted amazingly fluffy, in fact almost foamy. I enjoyed the bitterness of the very fine, fragrant matcha powder that balanced out the sweetness of the cream so overall, this wasn’t cloying at all. Every mouthful of this mille crepe was just heavenly as it just melted in the mouth – sheer decadence that was unparalleled.

The Gâteau aux Marrons ($7.50) was made up of two layers of almond cake with a whipped cream centre and the top was laced with piped chestnut cream with a sprinkling of roasted walnuts and sugar.

I always love chestnut cakes and that was why I ordered this. The chestnut cream was light with a subtle hint of chestnut (would prefer a more intense flavour) and the walnut bits gave a good crunch to the cake. I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t any chopped chestnuts in the cream (like the Mt Fuji I had from Chef Yamashita that was friggin’ delicious!) which I’m sure would have added some depth to it. The thick layer of cream overall made it look as though it was heavy and cloying but it wasn’t at all. This wasn’t too sweet either.

And of course, I’d need to have my pot of English Breakfast Tea ($5.00) to go with the cakes. It was a pity the tea selection was so small and this was just a very ordinary tea bag. Would have preferred a TWG or Gryphon tea instead.

Service wise, nothing to fault on. My orders were quick to be served and the service staff had promptly asked if I wanted a refill of hot water. Prices might be steep for the cakes but for such quality in taste, it was well worth every penny spent. The harmony of flavours, lightness, freshness and delicateness were what made Lady M cakes stand out. Highly recommended.
