603 Tau Sar Piah vs Royal River Bakery (aka Whampoa Tau Sar Piah)

Hello folks! How’s CNY preparation coming along? Just one more week to go. I’m back from a cruise on Sapphire Princess (amazing experience!) and still feeling quite shagged after a few nights of little or no sleep. Too much action at the casino, lol. And I’m having a bad sunburn and rash on my body which is so not nice at the moment. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and can’t wait to share all about it with you guys. Pictures of my trip will probably be up after CNY cos there are just too many to sort and I’m a little behind my current backlog 😳

Ah, so glad that I’m feeling a little more energetic today to resume blogging 🙂

W sprung a surprise visit with 2 big boxes of TAU SAR PIAH.

Me: Why buy so many? There’s only two of us.
W: All different flavours from 2 places so you can compare & blog about it.

How thoughtful.

And it’s perfect because I don’t remember having tried the tau sar piah from these 2 places before as I normally get mine from my all-time favourite Loong Fatt (630 Balestier Road) which is several units down away from 603 Tau Sar Piah.

So how did these fare?

603 Tau Sar Piah

603’s tau sar piah was really thick and puffy looking. The skin was really thin so I couldn’t really enjoy the layers of flakiness as I bit into it. But I did like that the crust was a little hard and crispy like a biscuit. The generous filling was packed to the max with no sign of a cavity within and it didn’t crumble with every bite as it was quite moist. Besides the traditional salty and sweet flavours, there were also others like durian, yam, black sesame, coffee and more. What really impressed me was that these tau sar piah weren’t overly greasy to the touch. In fact, I placed them on a paper towel and I didn’t even see much oil traces. Taste wise, they were good but not spectacular because there wasn’t a lot of shallot or lard fragrance in the filling. Though Loong Fatt’s ones are really oily, theirs have this distinctive aroma that’s still unparalleled.

Royal River Bakery (aka Whampoa Tau Sar Piah)

Royal River’s tau sar piah didn’t look like the usual round and puffy ones. These were flat and a little uneven in shape which just meant each piece was hand-made so you wouldn’t see two of the same. I found the crust pretty unique in a sense that there were two layers to the skin – exterior skin was flaky whereas interior skin was crumbly. It was just different from others and I quite liked that because these were made in a more modern style with interesting flavours like pandan, peanut, pineapple, durian, green tea, pineapple egg yolk & more on top of sweet lotus seed and salty bean ones.

I wouldn’t actually compare these two tau sar piahs because they were kinda different and each has its own merits. Both were equally good and I’d definitely return to buy more. This weekend, it shall be 🙂
