Balestier Road Hoover Rojak @ Whampoa Makan Place

Balestier Road Hoover Rojak

I tried the rojak from this stall many years ago when my then-colleagues and I came by for 梁照记 duck rice (just next door to this) on a few occasions and there would definitely be long queues at both stalls during peak lunch time. Though I was here around mid-afternoon, the queue at this stall never seemed to end. It’s just like my favourite Soon Heng Rojak @ Toa Payoh – brisk business all day!

Went for the minimum price of $4 which I felt was quite expensive for a rojak at a hawker centre setting. Could also add century egg at additional cost. Price had gone up but portion seemed to have shrunk as well. This plate was probably sufficient for just one person. I liked the sauce that was nicely balanced – neither too sweet nor too fishy – with no strong, overpowering taste of prawn paste. I was delighted to find jellyfish that gave a good crunch but was disappointed with the you tiao that was soft and soggy.

Overall, I thought this was a good rojak but not outstanding. Taste wise, the standard had definitely deteriorated since the first time I had it. Perhaps the stallholder was rushing to meet with the demand hence compromising on the quality execution of essential elements like the you tiao & tau pok which I’m sure are the favourite for many. I wouldn’t mind having it again as I did like the rojak sauce but I would probably not join a long queue for it.

After popiah, rojak is perhaps one of my favourite dishes that I cannot seem to find a decent one of in London! My parents recently went back to Malaysia on holiday and had the exact same complaints as you- the prices have gone up but the portions have gone down… It’s the same everywhere I guess 🙂

the woes of inflation! 🙁 Rasa Sayang at 5 Macclesfield Street (London) serves up a decent rojak – probably the closest to what you can get from Malaysia or Singapore 🙂 or next time when your folks are back to Malaysia, can ask them to grab some good shrimp paste and ginger flower and you can whip up your own!

I actually went to Rasa Sayang last Monday… Didn’t get the rojak but I wish I had because I ended up with a disappointing Hainanese chicken rice.
