Burrito Boys @ HillV2 Mall (Upper Bukit Timah Road)

Now that Downtown Line 2 has begun operation, it is so much easier to get to places that I don’t normally go due to transport hassle that would require me to make several changes of buses from where I live. I never did frequent Upper Bukit Timah area much because it’s just so out of the way for me but thanks to the MRT, it’s really a breeze to get there now.

The HillV2 mall is just a short walk away from the new Hillview MRT Station.

The husband and I spotted a new Mexican place for burritos and decided to head in for dinner.

Pretty empty on a Saturday evening.

The ordering system is very similar to that of Muchachos @ Keong Saik which is another burrito bar that we often dine at. First, you’d have to pick a style between a burrito (soft flour tortilla with your choice of filling), bowl (your choice of filling atop rice and/or lettuce) or tacos (two small flour tortillas) and then there are 5 filling options of chicken, beef, pork, vegetables and tofu to choose from. Each option comes with toppings like cilantro-lime rice, whole black or refried beans, cheese, sour cream and salsa.

You can choose to add on guacamole for an additional S$2, order extra sides (chips, nachos or quesadillas) and drinks or turn your main into a set meal to enjoy some savings.

We had Chips with Salsa (S$3) to share. Fresh, crunchy corn tortilla triangles with a zingy tomato salsa that I felt could be more in flavour.

I had the Carnitas Bowl (S$10.50) which didn’t look like much but I loved that smoky flavour of the pork.

After I mixed everything up, the flavours of all elements came together that really made this ‘salad bowl’ a little bit more interesting, appetising and tasty though I wished they could be more generous with the ingredients.

The husband had the Grilled Chicken Burrito (S$9.50) with extra guacamole (+S$2). It might look short, fat and plain on the outside but it was pretty heavy and substantial because…

…it was packed with a mass of ingredients all tightly squeezed together. The chicken was tender but not as flavoursome as the pork. I thought the filling was not bad but if the flour tortilla was cooked a little bit more, I would have liked it better because it was of a doughy texture that I didn’t quite enjoy.

Overall, it was a decent meal that I wouldn’t mind having again but in terms of taste and value, I would say Muchachos is still my preferred choice for similar Mexican food.
