Cafe hopping | Carpenter and Cook @ Lorong Kilat

After having some divine cakes at Lynn’s Cakes & Coffee @ Eng Kong Terrace, hubby and I walked to Lorong Kilat to check out our next cafe destination, Carpenter and Cook.

You know, the greatest fun and joy I get from cafe hopping is to be able to appreciate every cafe like a piece of art. Each of them has an individual style or theme and we can never find two cafes that are exactly the same. I really must applaud all the cafe owners out there for going all the way to pitch themselves as trendy icons. Singapore is so saturated with cafes and yet there are always new ones sprouting up. And we just never seem to get tired of them.

I loved the facade of C&C which brought us back to the streets of Paris just like one of those French vintage cafes we’d visited while there.

Entering the cafe was like walking into an antique shop where there were pretty teapots and teacups neatly displayed on wooden shelves, interesting pieces of furniture and all kinds of knick knacks.

All were specially sourced from UK and Europe by the C&C team. While some pieces were not for sale, others had price tags on so if anything catches your eye while you’re there, you can just buy and bring it home. Lovely!

The available pastries and bakes were displayed next to the ordering counter so you can take a look at everything before you decide which to go for.

The husband picked the Sticky Toffee Walnut Brownie ($6.50) from the sweets. This brownie had a very unique texture and the moment I took a bite, the brownie kinda melted in my mouth. It was dense, moist but crumbly at the same time, just like a tart. The toffee on top was actually more crunchy than sticky. Loved the crunch of the walnuts. Overall, it wasn’t very sweet too. Thumbs up!

Carpenter and Cook 7 Savoury Brioche

I chose the Savoury Brioche ($4.50) that was like a soft, fluffy bread with bacon, onions, mushrooms and cheese on top. This tasted like a pizza. The earthy flavour from the mushrooms was intense which we both liked. And though the bacon was a bit chewy, it added a layer of smokiness to the bun. The combination of all ingredients worked really well. The side salad was simply tossed in olive oil, nothing too fanciful.

Carpenter and Cook 8 Iced Strawberry Sparkling Tea

This Iced Sparkling Strawberry Tea ($6) was a welcoming drink. Very cold and refreshing. Definitely the best thirst-quencher on a hot afternoon. It had a hint of sweet strawberry fragrance, perfect for those who love fruity teas. My only gripe? There were too many ice cubes hence it could be easily finished up in just a few gulps.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tea time at C&C and would love to come back to try all their other creations that looked equally tempting. They have also opened a takeaway outlet named Carpenter and Cook Jr at Jasmine Road (near Thomson Plaza) which is good news to us as it’s nearer to where we live. Carpenter and Cook is definitely worth a visit. We give our 4 thumbs up!
