Day and Night Bistro @ Tiong Bahru

Day and Night Bistro

This place was formerly known as Two Face Pizza & Taproom but it closed last December after two years in business. Now, Day and Night runs on the same concept – it is a regular coffee shop that houses Ah Bong’s Italian and also serves up local favourites like yong tau foo by day; it then transforms into a trendy casual-dining bistro/pizzeria/taproom by sunset.

If only the kopitiams in my neighbourhood operate in the same manner too, we will be so spoilt for food choices and yet have somewhere near to chill out in on a weekday night with a glass of beer. Ang Mo Kio needs a hipster eating outlet too! 🙂

Don’t expect air-conditioning here as it’s still an old school open-air coffee shop. The atmosphere is just laid-back and you can come in your most comfy outfit and flip-flops.

Here, tables are clad in retro-looking gingham covers with standing chalkboards that cleverly hide the hawker stalls.

The chalkboards are also scribbled with the night’s selection of burgers, pizzas, pastas and draft beers.

Let’s take a look at the menu.

Decent selections of shareable pub grub.

And more substantial mains too.

The husband and I came by Day and Night to redeem a Groupon deal (S$15.80 for 2 tapas + 2 signature drinks worth S$30) that we bought a while back.

We arrived at about 5.15pm and the tables were always laid out in proper with service staff standing around and looking ready to welcome customers but we were turned away as one male service staff told us to come back at 6pm even though opening time was stated as 5 on their Facebook page. Not wanting to make a separate trip again, we just hanged around in the vicinity and came back later.

Order and payment had to be made at the counter right inside and food/drinks would be delivered to your table.

Drinks wise, there was only one choice i.e. Signature Drink (S$5) per the deal which was a fusion blend of sour plum, caixin and pineapple juice. It was just like a healthy vegetable fruit juice which the husband didn’t fancy. I thought it was alright except that I needed a little time to get used to that ‘raw green’ taste. The more I drank, the more I found it refreshing. Acquired taste probably, lol.

For the tapas, we ordered the Pork Belly with Maple Mayo (S$10) that came in a generous portion, perfect for sharing. The pork belly was crispy on the outside (with a crunchy crackling) and yet still had that tender bite to it. We didn’t like that maple mayo sauce though because it was too sweet and just didn’t go with the pork or fries. The fries might be from a bag but they were nicely fried to a crisp and crunch without being overly greasy. Recommended dish!

The Buffalo Wings (S$10) were also delightful. The skin was crispy and the meat was still moist. I loved that hot and tangy buffalo sauce that was perfectly balanced and the accompanying blue cheese dip simply lifted the flavour even more. My only gripe was that miserable stick of celery. Come on, it wouldn’t hurt to give a few more sticks.

Prices here were NETT with no GST or service charge. Reasonable pricing, decent tapas and a no-frills atmosphere. We don’t mind coming back again for pre-dinner drinks and snacks.

Haha, the buffalo wings weren’t out of this world but were way better than the ones from Chili’s cos’ the buffalo sauce was a more balanced concoction. Give it a try sometime!
