Easy Hummus Recipe

I was first exposed to Middle Eastern & Egyptian cuisine nine years ago when an ex-colleague brought me to Altazzag at Haji Lane where I had one of the best hummus served with freshly-baked pita bread. From then, I fell in love with the exotic flavours of the Near East.

I’d been regularly making this healthy, nutritious, low-GI hummus dip or spread which I’d eat with toast for breakfast or as a snack. It is ridiculous how expensive a small portion of hummus can be if you eat at a restaurant but home-made ones are just so incredibly affordable.

Hummus Recipe

Ingredients
1 can garbanzo beans 439g
2 cloves garlic
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp tahini (sesame paste)
1 tsp ground cumin
juice of 1 lemon
3 tbsp water
pinch of salt

Instructions
1. In a food processor, blend all ingredients (except water and salt) to a paste.
2. Gradually add water and blend to your desired consistency. Season with a pinch of salt.

You can get tahini from supermarkets here (international or organic section). I bought Melrose brand of Australia Tahini Sesame Spread from NTUC Fairprice at just under $11 a bottle which is enough to make many portions of hummus over time. Eat healthy and enjoy!
