Food Factory Outlet Shopping at Woodlands Terrace: Fassler Gourmet and Zac Meat & Poultry

Ever since my shopping trip to Fassler Gourmet (read my earlier blog post Food Factory Outlet Shopping at Woodlands Terrace: Fassler Gourmet) earlier this year when I lugged home a bountiful supply of salmon that lasted us some good couple of months, the husband and I returned again to replenish our inventory as well as to check out Zac Meat & Poultry which I didn’t get to visit the last time.

Fassler Gourmet needs no further introduction if you’ve read my previous post. It is a salmon factory situated at Woodlands Terrace where we can buy salmon and other seafood in bulk at reduced prices, cheaper than supermarkets or wet markets. This time round, the total savings of our purchase were much less than the previous time as prices for most products had been inflated over recent months though they were still priced within an acceptable range.

Here’s a glimpse of some worthy buys –

300g pre-cut salmon sashimi slices at $13.50 per tray

Price for this had gone up by $1.50 but for an entire tray of about 32-35 thickly sliced salmon, we had no complains. This would be indisputably the most affordable salmon sashimi we could find in Singapore. We also loved the freshly grated wasabi which was spicy but not overpowering.

Swordfish Belly Sashimi at $42/kg

I missed this out from the shelves the last time I was here so was really happy to find a reasonably ‘small’ sized piece (most of them were quite huge) for 2 persons’ consumption. At only $8.74 for this slab, this was indeed a steal as 5 slices of swordfish sashimi at Sushi Tei would already cost $10 anyway. Taste wise, they were all about the same. For this, you just need to defrost it and then slice to your preferred thickness.

We had two plates of swordfish sashimi as above twice and I used up the rest (about half slab) to make a seafood ceviche which I shall share the recipe later. Swordfish is generally tougher and more springy than salmon. It can be quite fibrous depending on the cut but overall, it tastes much sweeter than salmon and that’s why I like it. The husband still prefers his salmon though.

Food Factory Outlet Shopping at Woodlands Terrace: Fassler Gourmet and Zac Meat & PoultryThere weren’t any pre-cut salmon fillets this time so we bought one whole beautiful salmon slab (half a salmon) with skin on at $21/kg. This huge slab only cost $26.88 which I divided it to 12 smaller slices so I could use over several meals.

Frozen Salmon Belly Cubes $12 per 1kg pack

Frozen Salmon Belly Cubes $12 per 1kg pack

The price of salmon belly cubes had gone up by $2. If you like fatty, juicy salmon, then this is something not to be missed. I bought a pack for the folks the last time and they just pan-fried them to a golden brown and crisp (without adding extra oil). Utterly delicious! So now they had requested for more belly cubes again, lol. Did I mention these cubes are perfect for fish soups and steamboats too?

2 whole salmon heads for only $2

2 whole salmon heads for only $2

I was looking for the salmon jaws that I bought last time but they weren’t available so I bought these heads for my mum who loves nibbling on boney bits. She pan-fried these heads to crisp and just ate them on their own because there were a lot of meat beneath those bones especially at the cheek areas. Peeps who heart fish heads, this is a real bargain! All the salmon heads were considered ‘unwanted’ and were placed in containers near the entrance area. Funny thing was, there were so many people diving in for them because they were so dirt cheap. 1 pack (with 2 heads) was going for $2. And 3 packs only cost $5! Now we know why some Japanese buffet restaurants offer complimentary servings of braised salmon heads 🙂 And I’m sure these heads would make a good fish head curry too, lol.

Frozen Tuna Steaks 4 for $10 (deal)

Frozen Tuna Steaks 4 for $10 (deal)

Something new caught our eyes. This pinkish red tuna steak was going at $3 each or $10 for 4. The husband suggested to buy 4 since tuna is a rich source of lean protein and contains beneficial omega-3 fatty acids too. So far I had pan-seared two steaks (done medium with a pinkish centre) and served them with a side salad. It was delicious with no fishy taste at all. Highly recommended product! Very affordable too!

Marinated Atlantic Salmon $9.90 per 200g packet

Marinated Atlantic Salmon $9.90 per 200g packet

And we’d never leave without my favourite smoked salmon. This was $8.90 previously. Even though the price had increased by a dollar, I thought it was still value for money as this was quite a substantial pack which I could use for 2 meals for the both of us. These salmon were nicely smoked and tasted salty with a fragrant hint of herbs. Not only were they perfect for salads, they made a great accompaniment to bagel and cream cheese or potato rosti.

And this summed up our entire purchase.

A friendly reminder: Fassler only accepts cash and cheque payments (no NETS or credit cards) so bring ample cash along. Don’t forget to bring cooler bags too.

Before we left Woodlands Terrace, we popped over to Zac Meat & Poultry where they had put out a variety of sausages and cold cuts for sampling (right under the hot sun). Maybe that was their way to heat up the chilled products, lol.

I didn’t take pictures of the outlet as I planned to come another time to buy its meat products. I saw the price list onsite and found some items really worth purchasing so till next time, I shall blog in detail.

I didn’t expect to find herbs and spices on sale too. They were unbranded but were nicely packed in plastic containers and then priced according to their weight. So far these were the lowest prices for spices I’d seen!

I bought thyme, rosemary and garlic powder since I was running out of them but there were so much more of others like basil, cumin, cayenne powder, onion powder, falafel spice, fenugreek, hot paprika, oregano, etc. It was definitely a clever idea to sell these spices and rubs in a meat factory so people could just buy all ingredients at one stop.

I saw this bottle of chipotle sauce good for marinating meats so decided to grab one since it was only $1. Yes, you read me right. One dollar. Just buy to try for fun and see if I can whip out anything interesting.

Hi, how long can the swordfish belly sashimi last once it has been open?:)

    • Geri Tan says:

Hello Sarah, the swordfish belly sashimi came frozen so when I opened it and used half, I just stored the rest into an air-tight container and put it back into the freezer. I kept it for at least 3 weeks before thawing again to make a ceviche and it still tasted fresh. Hope this helps 🙂

  • Grace says:

Hi, did you thaw the swordfish belly sashimi at room temperature? Thanks!

    • Geri Tan says:

Hi Grace, I normally thaw frozen food in the fridge, not outside at room temperature. This didn’t take too long to thaw, probably about an hour and after slicing it, it’s all good to go 🙂
