Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun @ Old Airport Road Food Centre

Freshly Made Chee Cheong Fun at Old Airport Road Food Centre 1

The Old Airport Road Food Centre is one of our all-time favourite makan (‘eat’ in Malay) spots in Singapore. The husband and I used to frequent it very often (before Lao Ban Soya Beancurd outlets sprung up everywhere) just to grab a dozen of beancurd to go but not anymore since I started making my own beancurd at home! Recently we were back for breakfast as we were recommended to try this particular stall that was selling rice vermicelli rolls that were made on the spot. Freshness guaranteed.

Besides the usual chee cheong fun with chicken, mushroom, char siew or prawn, there were also less common options like turnip, egg, century egg, otah, scallop and pig liver. Each flavour was priced at an affordable $2 or $3. They were also selling Cantonese-style congees, mee sua, prawn rolls and dumplings for variety.

The rolls were made upon order, one by one so it was inevitable we had to wait some time for them to be ready.

We ordered the char siew and prawn cheong fun that came doused in this light & slightly sweet soy sauce based sauce that was seasoned just about right. The price paid included 2 rolls per flavour. I liked that the cheong fun skin was thin and smooth; the chilli paste was fragrant with bits of dried shrimps in it and tasted sweet and mildly spicy. I preferred the char siew filling to the prawn one as the meat was well marinated and flavoursome whereas the latter was bland. Our only gripe was the inconsistency in the quantity of prawns – one roll had 2 prawns and the other, only 1.

While these chee cheong fun were fresh, hot and pretty tasty, I thought the one at Tim Ho Wan was still better because its sauce was slightly more robust than this. However the husband totally digged this and thought this was the best cheong fun he had tried in Singapore. Lol. You just gotta try it yourself!
