Golden Mile Complex – A Piece of Thailand in Singapore

Golden Mile Complex

I seldom visit the Golden Mile Complex but when I do, it’s because I need something from the Thai supermarket on 2nd level which houses many made-in-Thailand products ranging from snacks, sauces, condiments, fresh spices and herbs for cooking Thai cuisine.

If you’re a big fan of sriracha (Thai hot sauce), you’d be spoilt for choices here. I couldn’t make up my mind on which bottle of sriracha to buy especially when all labels were in Thai but I was lucky to have met an elderly Thai lady who was doing her grocery shopping there. She took time to explain the different types of srirachas to me in fluent English and even gave me suggestions on how to use them for different dishes. Very warm and friendly indeed.

Tom Yum Flavoured Ikan Bilis and Coffee Flavoured Peanut Snack

These are just two of the regular snacks I’d bring back whenever I visit Bangkok but these tidbits are all readily available here at the supermarket.

The ikan bilis taste sweet and savoury with a subtle fragrance of tom yum spices and curry leaves. They are deep fried to crisp and are good as a snack on their own or you can pair them with porridge too.

The peanuts are wrapped in this brittle and crunchy shell that gives a nice aroma of coffee to the nuts. Best thing is, they are not oily to the touch.

Once you’re done with your checkout, do stop by the food stalls around the cashier/exit area for some authentic Thai street food.

This particular snack caught my eye:

Golden Mile Complex Khanom Buang

Khanom Buang or Thai Crispy Pancakes ($5.00 for a dozen)

The first time I had Khanom Buang wasn’t in Thailand but in Singapore. That was in 2010 when I had organised an international conference for a Thai client and we had a representative from the Royal Thai Embassy to do a cooking demonstration and he made these on the spot. Fresh, crispy and absolutely yummy. It left a deep impression in me but I hadn’t found this sold anywhere else in Singapore until I chanced upon them at Golden Mile again.

These Khanom Buang didn’t disappoint even though they were already pre-made and packaged. In fact, they still felt a little warm when I grabbed one pack. The pancake skin was like a crispy thin crepe that tasted similar to the ‘mee chiam kueh’ (peanut pancake) and each pancake is filled with a dollop of this rich and sweet cream and then topped off with some egg yolk threads. Sweet and salty. Very addictive snack. Worth a try!
