Traditional Haig Road Putu Piring – The Best in Singapore

Traditional Haig Road Putu Piring

Whenever I’m near Paya Lebar, I will always head to Haig Road Market & Food Centre for putu piring but now I don’t have to do that anymore because my favourite stall, Traditional Haig Road Putu Piring, has opened an outlet near where I live. Woohoo! ๐Ÿ™‚

Two days again, I shared about this pretty awesome ayam penyet I had from Uncle Penyet Fusion at the new Mr Teh Tarik Eating House at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6. And yes, this is the putu piring stall that I had briefly mentioned in the post.

Putu piring is actually the Malay version of kueh tutu (ๅ˜Ÿๅ˜Ÿ็ณ•) which most of us in Singapore are familiar with. It is not difficult to find here especially at pasar malams that would sprout up all over the island every now and then. Having tried various kueh tutu in Singapore, I think Haig Road ones are still the best.

The putu piring is all freshly made on the spot so every packet you order is always hot.

Traditional Haig Road Putu Piring

Putu piring is a round, steamed rice cake filled with gula melaka (coconut palm sugar) and served with desiccated coconut on the side.

The ones from Traditional Haig Road Putu Piring (AMK outlet) come in 5 pieces per pack for S$2.50. The lovely makcik (‘auntie’) in charge of taking orders and collecting payment is always amicable and polite to customers.

Each piece of the rice cake is so soft, moist and fluffy. With each bite, you would get this really aromatic, caramelised flavour of gula melaka that isn’t saccharine sweet and perfectly hits the spot. The desiccated coconut gives a lovely crunch too.

My folks aren’t big fans of sweet stuffs but whenever I buy these putu piring for them, they would just devour everything up in no time, lol. A must try for both the young and old!

I’m so glad that this childhood snack that I’ve eaten while growing up is still available today unlike many others that are either very rare or perhaps have become totally obsolete. This is one of the few old-school local goodies left that I think we should really support to keep the trade going.
