Hao Qing Xiang 好清香 AMK 628 – Homemade Chee Cheong Fun, Steamed Yam Cake & Tapioca Cake

One good thing about having a BBC (British-born Chinese) husband (who shares the same passion in food) as my BMB (Best Makan Buddy) is that I get to revisit many of my old favourite food places and also discover new ones too as we explore a different part of Singapore every week. He makes me see my homeland from a different perspective and it’s just amazing how much I’ve really learnt to appreciate our food culture and its heritage. Asked him if he missed England, he said NO! Lol.

Having tried some good Cantonese style cheong fun (vermicelli rolls) from Tim Ho Wan & Old Airport Road Food Centre, I decided to bring him to one of my favourite chee cheong fun stalls to try out the local version that came with plenty of sweet black sauce and chilli.

This stall at 628 Ang Mo Kio specialises in home-made chee cheong fun, yam cake, tapioca cake, chwee kueh, glutinous rice and guilinggao.

We just loved how smooth and silky the chee cheong fun was. The layers didn’t even stick to one another. What really stood out was the sweet sauce that wasn’t cloying and it came in a generous drizzle that all the cheong fun rolls could be nicely soaked in the sauce. The sesame seeds merely gave it a little nutty punch. The chilli was more on the sweet side but complemented the black sauce pretty well.

Steamed Yam Cake ($2 for min. 2 pieces)

Steamed Yam Cake ($2 for min. 2 pieces)

I wouldn’t actually use ‘pieces’ or ‘slices’ to describe the size of this yam cake. They should be slabs instead because they were really quite thick and big. There weren’t much of other ingredients inside the yam cake but we did find some solid yam cubes in it with the occasional dried shrimp and/or mushroom. Quite tasty but because the portion was quite big, we got a little sickly from eating too much of it. The black sauce was the same as the chee cheong fun’s.

Tapioca Cake ($1.30 for 3 pieces)

The husband loved their tapioca cakes to bits! Don’t ask me why, lol. I thought they tasted pretty standard. The kueh itself wasn’t too sweet and the grated coconut was pretty fresh too. A decent and inexpensive snack to munch on.

If this is your kind of breakfast food, this is a stall not to be missed. It also has a branch at Sims Vista Market & Food Centre (49 Sims Place, #01-05).
