Hong Heng Beef Noodle Soup and Laksa @ Kebun Baru Food Centre

Like many foodies out there, the husband and I sometimes face what’s commonly known as a ‘first world problem’ because we always don’t know what to eat even though there is a huge hawker centre in our neighbourhood and several coffee shops too. To me, I guess it’s a happy problem because it spurs me on to explore beyond what’s nearby to search for new eats and that was also why we came by Kebun Baru Food Centre one weekend.

We spotted two (very) long queues in the hawker centre – one was a mee hoon kway stall (ok I must admit, mee hoon kway isn’t quite my cup of tea) and the other…

Hong Heng Beef Noodle Soup and Laksa

…was this stall! Beef noodles, regular laksa and beef laksa. Wait a minute, beef laksa? That’s definitely something new to me 🙂

When it comes to beef noodles, I’d normally order the soup version. This Beef Noodle Soup (S$4.50) had a really robust broth. Definitely one of the better ones I had in Singapore. The portion of beef slices was also generous and the meat was just so tender. Loved the chilli sauce with chinchalok (fermented shrimps) that was packed with a punch.

And this was the highlight of our meal. This Beef Laksa (S$5.50) was as good as the regular laksa with plenty of beef slices and tau pok. It was supposed to come with cockles as well but I requested to exclude them. The gravy was extremely flavoursome. It wasn’t too spicy (can add more sambal if you want) or too oily and it wasn’t overly rich with coconut milk too. I actually slurped up all that moreish gravy that had bits of crispy dried shrimps in it. For the beef slices, some were tender but some were quite tough and chewy. Would definitely come back for this again. Worth the queue!
