Joma Bakery Cafe – Overpriced & mediocre baked goods but nice chill-out place

It seemed as though we had been in Hanoi for a long time, so much so that we didn’t know what else to do or where else to go. And there wouldn’t be a better time than now to chill out in a cafe and at the same time, plan our itinerary for Bangkok which would be our next destination right after Hanoi.

Joma Bakery Cafe

We picked Joma Bakery which was very near to our hotel. Happened to read up on it on TripAdvisor and it had some pretty good reviews.

Tea time treats for the two of us.

Hubby ordered an Americano, regular with no milk (35,000 VND). They used Arabica coffee beans from Laos. Not my kind of coffee as it tasted slightly acidic.

I had a Chai Tea Latte, regular (50,000 VND). Lovely hint of spice that wasn’t too overpowering.

The Chocolate Chip Cookie (25,000 VND) was the soft kind and it had a strong oat fragrance. Delicious when paired with my latte.

I liked that the Chocolate Croissant (40,000 VND) was warmed up first before being served to us. While the outside pastry wasn’t crispy anymore, the inside filling was a little molten and tasted exactly like Nutella.

This Chocolate Cake (70,000 VND) came with butter cream instead of my preferred fresh cream. It was rich but not too cloying. Overall, it was a moist chocolatey cake which we didn’t mind having.

This cafe meal was probably the most expensive throughout our entire time in Hanoi. Prices were definitely on the high side by local standards. I guess this cafe catered mainly to tourists as we didn’t see many locals (maybe none) here. Food wasn’t spectacular and definitely not value-for-money. Nonetheless, this was still a cosy place to relax in. Plus there is free wifi for all customers – you can get the password on the receipt itself.

Being conveniently located in the Old Quarter means you have an additional option to rest your legs and have a drink while exploring the city. But if paying high prices for mediocre baked goods & service isn’t your kind of thing, give this place a miss.
