Mei Heong Yuen Dessert 味香园甜品 @ Chinatown Point

Mei Heong Yuen Dessert

Honestly, I cannot remember if I’ve ever had a dessert at Mei Heong Yuen though I’ve passed by the shop countless times whenever I come to Chinatown and it is always busy. Initially I thought MHY only sells the usual traditional desserts like red/green bean soup, yam paste, peanut paste, herbal jelly and the like but it also offers special flavours like milk pudding (similar to the one from Yee Shun Dairy Company in Hong Kong), bird’s nest, durian mochi, almond with egg white and a small selection of light bites like Cantonese dumplings, pumpkin cakes, water chestnut cakes and more.

Mei Heong Yuen Dessert Menu

I dived straight for the colourful snow ice menu and though there were only 18 options, it still took me quite a while to pick what I wanted because all flavours seemed yum, lol.

Mei Heong Yuen Dessert Almond Sesame Snow Ice

I ordered the Almond & Sesame Snow Ice (S$6) which I thought was way better than those Korean bingsus I had tried in Singapore. I was so glad to have ordered this particular flavour of snow ice because it combined two popular Chinese desserts that were normally eaten hot i.e. almond paste and black sesame paste. Both pastes are probably more common desserts of our grandparents’ or parents’ generation and they never quite appealed to me before but turning them into snow ice like this is a match made in heaven – a marriage between old and new. Almond paste and black sesame paste had never tasted so good. Each flavour was rich and robust but not overly sweet. And I loved the texture of the snow ice that was thinly sliced and stacked so it was light and somewhat fluffy like a frozen cotton candy. The extra toppings (inclusive) of sliced almonds, grass jelly cubes and konnyaku jelly cubes just gave more crunch and bite to the dessert. Highly recommended dessert to beat the haze!
