Ocean Curry Fish Head @ Toa Payoh Lorong 4 – The Best Fish Head Curry in Singapore

I had known about Ocean Curry Fish Head more than five years ago when fellow colleagues highly raved about it. We would head there for lunch every now and then and I could still remember their very awesome Nonya-style fish head curry that was so worth travelling all the way there for. I hadn’t visited Ocean since it moved to its current location so when the foodie trio gang had a craving for fish head curry, this place immediately came to mind.

Though its name clearly indicates their specialty, Ocean is also a mixed rice stall in its own coffeeshop with a few more tenants selling other foods.

We ordered the smallest sized fish head curry (S$25 for 2-3 pax) as well as three side dishes of bittergourd (S$3), beancurd (S$3)ย and abalone mushrooms (S$5). Prices weren’t cheap for ‘coffeeshop standard’ but I would still highly recommend the abalone mushrooms that are not commonly found at mixed rice stalls – just loved the firm texture of the mushrooms.

Ocean used Sea Bream (or Ang Go Li in our local dialect) for their fish head curry. What we had was quite a big-sized (half) fish head that was really meaty. The meat was very fresh with no fishy stench at all. And for the first time, I decided I would be adventurous so I ate the eye area which had quite a bit of collagen-like stuff – boy it was yum!! I’m in love with fish eyes now, lol. There were also lots of lady’s fingers (okra), brinjal and pineapple slices in the gravy. Because this was Nonya-style curry, the gravy was more on the tangy side because of the use of tamarind and that was what I loved the most – it wasn’t heavy and it didn’t make me feel sickly too. The spicy, sweet and sour gravy was simply uplifting and moreish. We kept dousing our rice with the gravy and we probably slurped up every bit of the sauce, lol.

White rice was S$0.60 per serving and there were also wet towel charge (S$0.20 per person) and GST too. During peak meal times (including weekday lunch time), it can be difficult to get a table so come early if possible or give them a call to reserve a table if you have a big group.

Though I hadn’t been here for a while, the standard of the fish head curry was as good as I remembered. In fact, I would say it was still the best fish head curry I had in Singapore to date. Highly recommended – not to be missed. ๐Ÿ™‚
