Oven Marvel 皇冠烘培 @ Sunshine Plaza – The Best Chicken Pies in Singapore!

I had a special affinity with chicken pies even before I was born. I remembered my mum had once told me before that she always had cravings for 2 types of food when she was carrying me. One of them was nasi lemak and the other, chicken pies. Lol. That’s why when she put on so much weight after I was born, she blamed it on me ~(>_<~) And true enough, both are still my favourite food now.

I didn’t expect to find this bakery at Sunshine Plaza that served up some awesome pastries. Yes, this is the same place where Victor’s Kitchen and Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House are.

Oven Marvel is an unassuming bakery that people may just miss when passing by but the whiff of fresh pastries baking in the oven had enticed me to explore further. One peep inside and I saw chicken pies, curry puffs and assorted muffins for sale.

A lady in front of me bought all the chicken pies and most of the curry puffs to go so I was only left with one curry puff which I did grab anyway so I could munch on it while I waited for a new batch of chicken pies to be ready in 10 minutes.

A true-blue curry puff made from puff pastry. Most of such similar curry puffs that I had tried in the past were either too greasy or were simply unexciting because the pastry was not fantastic and the curry filling tasted weak. This curry puff ($2.80) is what every curry puff should be. Crispy, buttery, delicate and flaky. The puff pastry crust wasn’t too thick so when I took a bite, the texture was quite light and clean. The curry filling had generous cubes of tender potatoes and chicken meat, wasn’t spicy but aromatic enough. I’d still prefer the curry filling of 1A Crispy Curry Puff but this tasted very homely and I really liked its crust.

Woohoo! Nothing beats a piping hot fresh-from-oven chicken pie ($3.80)! I loved the golden brown hue on the pie that was evenly baked.

And when I cut open the pie, the filling didn’t gush out immediately, it slowly flowed out because it was so thick and creamy. The pastry was the same as the curry puff’s but this was better because it was hot and fresh. The inner layers of the pastry was soaked with the gravy and had a bite to it. Really reminded me of a chicken pot pie. The chicken filling was so flavoursome with chunks of chicken meat, potatoes, mixed vegetables and a hint of ground black pepper. Need I say more? This is a must-try for all chicken pie lovers! It’s the best of the BEST!
