Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House @ Sunshine Plaza

Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House used to have an outlet at North Bridge Commercial Complex (the current Bugis Cube) along North Bridge Road and I often had my lunch there when I was working at Liang Seah Street many years back. When the outlet closed several years ago, I was deeply disappointed as I was missing their wanton mee and fried wantons so when I came across their other outlet at Sunshine Plaza a while back, I was just thrilled.

While the entire Sunshine Plaza seemed rather quiet on a Saturday afternoon, this noodle house (as well as Victor’s Kitchen that was a few units away) were packed to the max. Just find an empty table and take a seat, someone will just come over to take your order.

Fried Wanton $3 for big portion (approx. 12 pieces)

This is probably the only reason why customers flock here for their wanton mee. Every piece of wanton had a miserable portion of filling that didn’t add much value in terms of texture or flavour but it was the crispiness of the fried wanton skin that was so alluring. Thin, light and not oily at all. The moment I took a bite of the fried wanton, the resounding crunch just became so apparent. Same went for the other patrons seated on neighbouring tables. Though the mayo dip had a watered down consistency, it had a sweetness to it that really elevated the taste of the wanton. This is a must order if you like fried food and you need not worry about any smell of reused oil because this had none.

Wanton Mee $4 for small portion

This wanton mee is different from the usual ones we get from hawker centres that are tossed in tomato ketchup and/or chilli sauce. It was doused in a black savoury sauce that was quite salty and robust in flavour. I liked that the noodles had a firm and springy texture but was disappointed with the char siew that was just unexciting. In fact, I found the meat a little too chewy and tasteless for my liking. The noodles came with a bowl of soup with a couple of wantons in it that contained as little filling as their fried counterparts. Overall, I felt the standard had deteriorated. This was a decent wanton mee that I didn’t mind eating again but the only thing that was sensational was just the fried wanton. Fried wantons + noodles are probably just what I needed.

And when you’re done with your meal, don’t forget to grab some chicken pies from Oven Marvel (#01-51) which in my opinion, serves up the best chicken pies in Singapore. Try one when it’s freshly out from the oven. Enjoy!
