Sometimes it can be so easy to be deceived by long queues, thinking that the food must be REALLY good that’s why so many people are willing to queue and wait. But it’s really not the case every time, isn’t it? Here at Song Heng, there is absolutely no queue at all. And it’s not that it has no business but the stall helper will personally deliver your food to your table so you just need to place your order, give your table number, make payment and wait while seated. A glance at the exercise book that they scribble your order on would give you an idea of how many customers are ahead of you.

During breakfast and lunch hours on both weekdays and weekends, the wait can be as long as half an hour because there are just too many people ordering. So if you wanna try this, make sure you’re appointment-free and you’re not overly hungry and grouchy.

I wasn’t a big fishball noodles fan previously because it’s hard to find a good one these days but after trying Song Heng’s, I must say it’s one of the best fishball noodles I’ve eaten so far in Singapore and it’s also one that the fussy folks never complain of, surprisingly! I’ve been patronising the stall for a couple of years now and the standard has always been consistent. Service is also friendly.

I’d normally order kway teow soup with no minced pork and it comes with smooth, silky rice noodles at the bottom with a generous helping of lean pork slices, fish cake slices, bouncy fish balls and chinese lettuce. What I really like about this is that the broth isn’t oily at all and though it looks really clear and plain, it’s actually quite flavoursome without being overly salty. No MSG is used so I can finish the soup without worries. The fishballs are big and springy that I’m sure if I throw one on the table, it’d bounce back up, lol. The fish cakes are delicious too as they have been fried to a golden brown on the outside before slicing. The pork slices are a tad too tough though because they are of leaner cuts but for a healthier meal, it’s not something I cannot put up with.

My ideal soupy breakfast. A bowl of hearty goodness.
