Soup Spoon @ Ion Orchard – A Low Calorie Meal Option

Who says eating out is always unhealthy? There are actually many different types of food that weight watchers can go for and one best option is soup. Soup Spoon is one of my preferred places to go to for western style soups with my all-time favourite being the Simon and Garfunkel Chicken and Mushroom Ragout (at 320 calories per serving excluding bread roll). One good thing about picking such a soup is that all the ingredients within are not pureed so you get all the crunch from the diced vegetables, bite from the meat, higher fibre goodness which also makes it a low to medium GI dish that can fill us up for longer. For the bigger appetites who think soups can’t fill you up, you may want to consider this.

The husband and I were at Ion Orchard earlier and I saw this Bhutanese Stew on Chef Specials which I was immediately interested to try.

I didn’t expect a rich looking stew like this to have only 221 calories which was perfect for me so I didn’t have to work my dinner off too hard at the gym. I’m not familiar with Bhutanese cuisine so I can’t comment how authentic the flavours of this soup are but this was definitely a volcano of textures and flavours that’s guaranteed to ignite your senses. The fragrance of the common Asian condiments of red onions, ginger, coriander and garlic all gave this soup a superb aroma. The tender chicken pieces were succulent as thigh or leg meat was used instead of breast. The heat of course came from the green and red chillies. In fact, I could see chilli seeds swimming in the soup. A perfectly balanced spice that really got me hooked. I’m definitely going to try come up with this at home!

The husband opted for an even lighter stew at an incredible 177 calories only. A humble-looking soup that’s packed with a lot of flavours in it. The broth is made with Japanese sake and mirin and an assortment of vegetables like lotus roots, radishes, carrots, mushrooms, bamboo shoots etc that really sweetened the soup further. This was light yet hearty and I couldn’t resist buying a take home soup pack for my next day’s lunch.

Whether it’s Asian, Western or Fusion, light or heavy soup, there’s definitely something to suit every mood or taste bud. Best of all, Soup Spoon doesn’t use any MSG or preservatives in their soups so every bowl of soup is definitely a wholesome and nutritious meal on its own.
