Thasevi Food Famous Jalan Kayu Prata Restaurant – Is It Way Past Its Glory Days?

Thasevi Famous Jalan Kayu Prata Restaurant

The last time the husband and I came by Thasevi was probably 4 or 5 years ago. A while back, we happened to be in the area and thought we would stop by for supper with our usual order of plain prata, egg prata and mee goreng. It was a Saturday night but it was so quiet at the restaurant with very few occupied tables – a totally different scenario from our last visit. I had heard from fellow foodie friends that the quality of food here had deteriorated over the years and seriously, we were more shocked than disappointed after the meal. It’s really unbelievable that this was once the famous Jalan Kayu prata place.

Their plain pratas used to be really crispy, airy, light and flaky inside out but the ones we had this time were cold and chewy with some parts of uncooked dough. The egg prata didn’t fare any better. It was as though these pratas were left out since morning and nobody even bothered to reheat them before serving to customers. Moreover, there weren’t even many customers (or orders) to manage so I couldn’t understand how they could serve up such food to people.

Thasevi Famous Jalan Kayu Prata Restaurant Mee Goreng

I wasn’t sure if it was because we started off with the very bad pratas that by the time we tasted this mee goreng, we just felt it lost that oomph that it once had. Middle-of-the-road stuff that was decent but not good enough for us to travel back here to eat.

The only saving grace was the teh tarik – well, how bad could a pulled tea be? At least it was served hot, thank goodness.

Wasted calories. Awful service. Thasevi – a name that was ever remembered for its best pratas in Singapore – it’s now time to say goodbye.

Yes, it’s sad when a place you’ve enjoyed in the past no longer lives up to its name…hope you find a new place to enjoy! ๐Ÿ™‚

isn’t it sad to see a place from your past in such a bad shape ๐Ÿ™ and on another note, we have the same flat bread in Pakistan and we call it ‘paratha’ as well ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Geri Tan says:

It is ๐Ÿ™ the place is just surviving on its past good reputation but really doesn’t live up to it anymore. On my blacklist now, lol. I’ve never tried a Pakistani paratha and talking about Pakistani food, I should really go look around if there’s any Pakistani restaurant in Singapore here that I can try ๐Ÿ™‚

If you like spicy only then you would like Pakistani food! Pakistani food is very much like Indian food but with somewhat less ingredients ๐Ÿ™‚

        • Geri Tan says:

I love spicy food! If Pakistani food is similar to Indian food, then I’m sure I will like it too ๐Ÿ™‚ What are some of your national dishes that you think I ought to try as a first timer?

          • Vajeea says:

I think you will love biryani (it is rice cooked with chicken or meat) and daal (lentils) with paratha or naan (flat bread). These are among the everyday pakistani food. I hope you are able to find a nice Pakistani restaurant ๐Ÿ™‚

I might have just found one in town ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for the recommendation!
