Couple of weeks ago, I passed by Blk 728 Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 (beside Broadway Plaza and opposite the McDonald’s at Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West) when I headed to the library and was surprised to see that the old coffeeshop that used to house two of the best eats in the neighbourhood (Broadway Claypot Rice & Xu Yang Tonic Soup) was gone.
Now, Mr Teh Tarik Eating House has taken over the coffeeshop space. Like the rest of the Mr Teh Tarik in Singapore, this is a halal coffeeshop that offers a wide array of cuisines like Indian (roti prata & the like), fish soup, Korean, Western, tze char, goreng pisang etc. And guess what? Traditional Haig Road Putu Piring has opened an outlet here too! Shall blog about that later. 😉
Hubby and I noticed that most of the patrons there were happily digging into plates and plates of smashed fried chicken from this particular stall. We were so tempted, we just had to lunch there.
We ordered the Nasi Ayam Penyet (S$6.50) that came with a huge whole chicken leg, thick chunk of firm tofu, cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumber and lettuce. The rice came doused with curry gravy (they would ask you if you wanted the gravy upon ordering) and a sambal belacan on the side.
While the curry gravy was a good idea to keep the rice moist because everything else was so dry, flavour-wise, it didn’t leave much of an impact. I was, however, blown away by the really piquant sambal belacan that was so fiery hot but it was the kind that would make you want it more and more as you eat it.
The chicken leg was fried to sheer perfection – the skin was so crispy, the boney parts were so crunchy and the meat inside was still so moist and juicy. Pairing this chicken with the chilli was just heavenly. I also liked the small bits of fried batter that gave a good crunch – like the ones we would always get when we eat Long John Silver’s. Wish they would give tempeh too – that would have been a great accompaniment.
S$6.50 for a meal at a void deck coffeeshop isn’t perhaps the most economical but with a good portion size of a delicious, meaty chicken leg, I can’t see why this is not value for money.
Can’t wait to be back to try the rest of the dishes on the menu. 🙂
