Breakfast Hola 早餐好了 at Anchorvale Village

Breakfast Hola 早餐好了 at Anchorvale Village brings Taiwanese breakfast vibes to the heartlands of Singapore. The name literally means “breakfast is ready” in a blend of English and Hokkien—quite fitting for Singapore’s multicultural food scene. After establishing their first outlet on South Bridge Road in Chinatown, they’ve now expanded to Anchorvale Village, making it more accessible for those living in the northeast.

First Impressions and Ambience

Walking into Breakfast Hola, you’re greeted by a modern cafe setting with a distinctly Taiwanese flair. The ordering system is straightforward—find a table, scan a QR code to place your order and pay, then collect your food when your table number is called. While waiting, you’ll be serenaded by nostalgic Mandopop tunes from the likes of Stefanie Sun and JJ Lin, creating that perfect casual brunch atmosphere.

The Beverages: A Mild Disappointment

I started with their Good Morning Coffee ($3.50), requesting it kosong (without sugar) as I normally do. The coffee, sadly, fell short in the flavour department. It wasn’t “gao” (strong) enough for my liking—rather weak and lacking the robust punch that Singaporeans typically expect from a good cup of kopi.

The Good Morning Milk Tea ($3.50) was equally underwhelming. It tasted more like a flavoured tea (possibly Earl Grey?) rather than the traditional black tea. Like the coffee, it wasn’t potent enough to make an impression.

Honestly, both beverages were outshined by the kopi and teh from the hawker centre upstairs at Anchorvale Village, which cost only half the price but delivered twice the flavour. A bit disappointing for a place specialising in breakfast.

The Food Menu at Breakfast Hola

Egg Crepe Roll ($7.50)

The menu offers three crepe options: Original Crepe, Whole-Wheat Crepe (+$1.10), or Scallion Oil Pancake (+$2.20), with various fillings to choose from. I went with the original crepe with ham.

The crepe appeared thin and flat when served—much crispier than the dan bing I’ve had in Taiwan. While the concept is appealing, the execution felt lacking for the price point. At $7.50 for this small portion, it didn’t offer good value for money.

Grilled Pork Meat & Pork Floss Club Sandwich ($12.80)

This was presented as two whole sandwiches, each cut into four triangles and pierced with skewer sticks—quite Instagram-worthy. The sandwich had lovely textural contrasts, but the overall flavour leaned too sweet, primarily due to the pork floss being more sweet than savoury. With a better balance of flavours, this club sandwich could have been the star of the meal.

Black Sesame Thick Slice Toast ($5.80)

This was the standout item of our visit to Breakfast Hola. If you’re a fan of black sesame paste, you’ll absolutely love this toast. The black sesame spread was incredibly rich and aromatic, making each bite a delight. However, it’s best shared with a companion as the richness can become overwhelming if eaten alone.

Is Breakfast Hola Worth Your Money?

Our total bill came to $33.10, which isn’t exorbitant for cafe dining in Singapore. However, considering the portion sizes and overall quality, Breakfast Hola doesn’t quite deliver the value I’d expect. The prices would be justified if the execution matched the concept, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case during my visit.

It’s worth noting that Anchorvale Village has a fantastic hawker centre just upstairs, offering much more affordable and often better options, including popular stalls like Hakka Leipopo Thunder Tea Rice and Ah Tan Wings. With such strong competition nearby, Breakfast Hola faces an uphill battle to win over local diners.

The Final Verdict on Breakfast Hola

While I appreciate the concept behind Breakfast Hola and its attempt to bring authentic Taiwanese breakfast culture to Singapore, the execution falls short of expectations. The menu offers good variety, and the ambience is lovely, but the food and beverages need significant improvement to justify their prices.

The black sesame toast showed glimpses of potential, but one good item isn’t enough to warrant a return visit, especially with so many excellent alternatives nearby. Perhaps the South Bridge Road outlet offers a better experience, or maybe the kitchen at this new Anchorvale Village branch is still finding its footing.

For now, I’d recommend exploring the hawker centre upstairs if you’re in Anchorvale Village and craving a satisfying breakfast that offers better value for money.
