LIDL UK wasn’t even on my radar until I tried the doughnuts and cookies my FIL always buys from there. He’s a regular at the local store, making his weekly pilgrimage for these treats. My MIL needs her afternoon tea ritual sorted, and apparently, LIDL is the answer. After trying what he brought home, I decided to go down LIDL myself to check it out. I was not disappointed.
That first visit changed everything. The bakery section hit differently. Fresh bread smell everywhere. Proper bakes. Not those pre-packaged stuff you see at some supermarkets in Singapore. Since then, I’ve been back more times than I can count. There’s a LIDL near where we are, which makes this whole thing dangerously convenient for my wallet.
The Bakery That Started It All
The LIDL bakery deserves its own fan club, seriously. Those jam-filled doughnuts my FIL buys for my MIL? Yummy. So soft and fluffy. Not too sweet too.
The 49p all butter croissants are just as good. I’ve tried croissants from fancy bakeries around Singapore. I’ve paid silly money for butter-laden pastries. The LIDL croissants cost peanuts and taste better than most. They bake them fresh throughout the day. You can grab one warm from the shelf. The layers flake properly. The inside stays soft. It’s everything a croissant should be.
The toffee yum yum deserves a mention too. My husband’s favourite. These sell out ridiculously quick. There were a few occasions when we went and just found empty shelves. Couldn’t get any. That’s how popular they are.
Then there are the assorted cookies. These come in double, triple, and white chocolate flavours. 45p each. So cheap and so ridiculously good. Every bite is a comforting bite. They go so well with black coffee. I stock up every visit because at that price, why wouldn’t you? Crunchy edges, soft centres, proper chocolate chunks. They put expensive bakery cookies to shame.
Beyond the Bakery: What I Always Buy at LIDL UK
The bakery pulled me in, but the rest of the store keeps me coming back. LIDL UK stocks products I didn’t know I needed until I tried them. Now they’re on my shopping list every single time.
Alesto Mixed Nuts
Perfect for guilt-free snacking! They’ve got all sorts like cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans, etc.
No artificial flavours. No excessive salt. Just proper nuts that actually taste fresh.
Tower Gate Biscuits
Classic British biscuits done right. The custard creams taste like childhood. Rich tea biscuits that don’t fall apart in your tea. Bourbon creams with actual chocolate flavour.
These cost next to nothing compared to branded versions. Taste identical, sometimes better.
Rowan Hill Bakery Cakes
When the fresh bakery runs out, these packaged cakes save the day. They come in generous sizes too. Perfect for when unexpected guests show up for tea. My mother-in-law approves of these for her afternoon tea rotation.
Knightsbridge Herbal Teas and Fruit Teas
The Knightsbridge range offers pretty good variety. There’s peppermint tea that helps improve digestion as well as redbush tea that is packed with antioxidants.
Boxes cost less than half what you’d pay for branded versions. Same quality, better price.
Deluxe Range of Cakes and Biscuits
LIDL’s Deluxe range punches above its weight. These aren’t mediocre supermarket offerings. Their all-butter shortbread crumbles perfectly. And their Victoria sponge cakes taste as good as M&S versions.
Fin Carré Chocolates
I loveeeeeeeee the Salted Pretzel Milk Chocolate. Crunchy pretzel pieces throughout. Perfect sweet and salty balance.
The Rum, Raisin & Nut is my other favourite. Actual rum flavour, not that synthetic taste you get elsewhere. Plump raisins, whole nuts.
Cien Hand Cream
A more affordable alternative to Aveeno, as both contain colloidal oatmeal.
The formula is rich and genuinely moisturising. Doesn’t leave behind a greasy feel like some other hand cream brands.
Lupilu Baby Wipes
I use these for quick clean-ups, removing makeup, wiping down surfaces. Also gentle enough for sensitive skin. Cost less than branded baby wipes. Stock up every visit because they’re genuinely useful for everything.
Naturis Smoothies
The chilled section stocks these smoothie bottles. Pretty similar to The Juice Company smoothies I always get from ALDI. No added sugar and tastes like real fruit.
Why LIDL UK Works for Me
Shopping at LIDL UK hits different. The bakery keeps me loyal. Fresh croissants for breakfast. Toffee yum yums that sell out in minutes. Those 45p cookies that taste like they should cost triple.
We have a good sized LIDL within walking distance from where we live. It’s become routine for us. We hit it up several times a week. Quick trip for bakery items. Maybe grab some Fin Carré chocolate. Check if those toffee yum yums are still in stock.
Prices are relatively cheap too. Same quality, sometimes better, always cheaper. My father-in-law was onto something when he became a regular. The man knows value, haha. 😉
