Manneken Pis Damrak Review: Amsterdam’s Most Famous Fries

Manneken Pis Damrak serves up Belgian-style fries that actually deliver on the hype. Located right on Damrak, this spot’s been pulling crowds for good reason.

Manneken Pis Damrak is only a 5-minute walk from Centraal Station. It’s located on Damrak Street, the main avenue leading to Dam Square. Impossible to miss it as there’s always a queue out front.

The Price Breakdown (Sauces Cost Extra)

The fries come in three sizes. Small sets you back €5.65, medium €6.65, and large €8.95. Here’s the catch – sauces cost extra. First sauce runs €1.50, second one €1. Bit of a pain, but wait till you see the options.

The fries are par-fried first, then fried again to get that extra crispy crunch.

First Visit: Nailed It

We grabbed a large fries with truffle mayo and peanut sauce. The truffle mayo hit different – proper truffle flavour punching through, not that fake essence nonsense. Peanut sauce started out tasting like Singapore McDonald’s curry sauce (no joke), then the nutty bits kicked in. Both sauces came thick and packed with flavour.

Manneken Pis Damrak

The fries at Manneken Pis Damrak? Properly done. Double-fried technique shows. Outside stayed crunchy and crispy. They par-fry first to pre-cook the potatoes, then fry a second time for that crispiness. Inside was soft and fluffy. Large portion was more than enough for both of us. Quite filling actually as portion size was generous.

Second Visit: Slight Wobble

Round two at Manneken Pis Damrak saw us trying garlic sauce and special curry. Garlic sauce played it safe – mildly garlicky, nothing aggressive. Special curry mixed curry with mayo and onions. Bit sweet, bit starchy, reminded us of Japanese curry sauce.

Fries weren’t as stellar this time. Felt underdone, lost some crispiness. Still decent because those piquant sauces saved the day. Made everything so shiok to eat.

Final Thoughts

Manneken Pis Damrak delivers solid fries when they get it right. Sauce game strong, portions fill you up proper. Just know consistency varies visit to visit.

What makes this place special? That massive sauce menu. You could eat here every day for months and still mix up different combos without repeating. The math works out – 25 sauces means endless possibilities. Still ranks as one of the best fries spots around. If you’re visiting Amsterdam, Manneken Pis Damrak is a fries place you don’t want to miss. 🙂
