Mini Keria Gula Melaka Review: Singapore’s Best Sweet Potato Doughnuts on Bussorah Street

Mini Keria Gula Melaka wasn’t part of my plans when I was walking down Bussorah Street after breakfast at PARKROYAL on Beach Road during our weekend staycation. I didn’t expect them to be open since Google showed they only open at 11:30am. It was 10:20am when I spotted the OPEN sign hanging on their door – what a pleasant surprise!

This small shop has built its entire reputation around one thing: kuih keria, those beloved Malay sugar-glazed sweet potato doughnuts. For a shop to sell only one thing, it has to be really extraordinary. Naturally, I had high expectations for their kuih keria.

Keeping It Simple: Freshly Made, Nicely Packed

I popped into the shop and bought a small box. They only had two sizes to choose from – keeping things simple. The little doughnuts were already neatly packed in boxes with the lids open, freshly made and ready to enjoy—no waiting or fuss required.

The Moment of Truth: First Bite

One bite and I was completely sold. Unlike other kuih keria I’d had before that were coated with crystallised sugar, these had a shiny glaze of gula melaka. The texture contrast was absolutely perfect – somewhat crunchy on the outside whilst the inside remained soft with a lovely fragrance of sweet potato.

The best thing? It wasn’t even as sweet as I thought it would be! That gula melaka glaze provides just enough sweetness without overwhelming the natural sweet potato flavour.

What Sets Mini Keria Gula Melaka Apart

The preparation technique clearly differs from typical sweet potato doughnuts you’ll find elsewhere. These aren’t dense or heavy like many versions. Instead, they maintain an airy quality that makes them dangerously addictive. The gula melaka coating also creates that distinctive glossy finish.

Payment Info

Mini Keria Gula Melaka only accepts PayNow or cash. No card payments here, so come prepared.

Final Verdict:

Hands down, this is the best kuih keria I’ve had in Singapore or anywhere else! It’s a definite must-try if you’re in the area.

Simple as that – Mini Keria Gula Melaka knows what they do well and they do it brilliantly. 😉
