Siblings Gelato became a highlight of our rainy afternoon in Johor Bahru. What began as a quick stop to escape the downpour turned into one of the most memorable gelato experiences I’ve had this year.
The Unexpected Discovery
After polishing off our dim sum brunch at Tian Xin Lou, we planned to stroll back to our hotel. Mother Nature had other plans. Heavy rain forced us to duck into the nearest cafe, and thank goodness it was Siblings Gelato.
The cosy interior drew us in with its clean lines and modern fixtures. We had only planned on one scoop each – a small treat to pass the time while waiting out the downpour.
Menu Temptations Strike
Then we spotted their menu. One look at their gelato waffle combo and our “just one scoop” plan went straight out the window.
Sometimes the best food decisions happen on impulse. This was definitely one of those moments.
Earl Grey Tea (RM8)
My husband felt like having something hot, so he went with the Earl Grey. It was a standard tea bag – nothing fancy, but it did the job.
The Star: Gelato Waffle (RM28 + RM6 Premium Toppings)
Siblings Gelato’s waffle game is seriously impressive. We topped up an extra RM6 for two premium gelato flavours, and honestly? Worth every ringgit.
The waffle itself deserves recognition. Not your typical crispy style, but something more interesting. It has a lovely chew without being dense or heavy. Perfectly balanced texture that doesn’t compete with the gelato stars.
They serve it with a small glass beaker of chocolate sauce – such a nice touch. The sauce isn’t overly sweet, adding just the right amount of richness. Pour it generously; you won’t regret it.
Sicilian Pistachio
This flavour absolutely blew us away. Real pistachio intensity hits you immediately – no artificial nonsense here. You can taste the quality in every spoonful.
The texture? Silky smooth with tiny pistachio pieces adding delightful texture contrast.
Gianduja
Chocolate lovers, listen up. This isn’t your basic chocolate gelato. Gianduja brings serious sophistication – rich, creamy, intensely nutty and chocolatey all at once.
More complex than regular chocolate but less sweet than Nutella. It’s what grown-up chocolate dreams are made of. The hazelnut notes dance perfectly with the cocoa, creating something truly special.
Both gelato flavours boasted velvety textures that melted beautifully on the tongue. Neither was overly sweet – crucial for actually finishing a whole portion without feeling overwhelmed. We cleaned the plate completely without that horrible cloying feeling some desserts leave behind.
Final Thoughts
What began as a rain shelter turned into a proper food discovery. Malaysia’s food scene continues to surprise and delight, and places like this prove why.
We’re definitely returning to explore their other gelato flavours. Any place that can turn a rainy afternoon into a highlight deserves repeat visits.
If you’re in the area and fancy some proper gelato, Siblings Gelato won’t disappoint. Just don’t blame me when you end up ordering way more than you originally planned.
