The Happy Pig Pancake Shop: A Cosy Amsterdam Pancake Haven

The Happy Pig Pancake Shop became our saving grace after Upstairs Pancakes turned us away without a reservation. We’d wanted to try that famous spot housed in a 16th century building with its really steep stairs leading up to the dining area. But no reservation meant no pancakes there. Located just 500 metres away, The Happy Pig Pancake Shop proved to be a brilliant alternative.

The walk took seven minutes through Amsterdam’s drizzly streets. We arrived to find the cafe completely empty – just us and the warm interior. Perfect timing, really. The rain drummed against the windows whilst we settled in with our hot tea.

What We Ordered

We kicked things off with English Breakfast and Earl Grey teas, both at €3.50 each. Then came the main event: two of their bestselling pancakes.

Everybody’s Sweetheart (€9.95) arrived first. This pancake featured banana, chocolate-hazelnut sauce, and toasted almond slices. The texture reminded me of a crepe rather than thick American-style pancakes.

Here’s the clever bit – they rolled the whole thing up and sliced it like sushi. Made eating so much easier. Banana and Nutella together never disappoints. The almonds added nice crunch.

Dutch Delight (€9.95) won me over completely. Gouda cheese paired with fig jam created this brilliant savoury-sweet combo. The jam’s sweetness balanced perfectly against the cheese’s sharpness.

Imagine eating pizza in crepe form – that’s basically what this was. I preferred this one hands down.
