Ah Jie Hokkien Mee at Ang Mo Kio: A Smoky, Wok Hei-Packed Surprise

So here’s how we found Ah Jie Hokkien Mee. We were at Ang Mo Kio Central one morning sorting out our international driver’s permit at the Automobile Association. Once that was done, our stomachs started demanding attention.

We walked over to the coffeeshop at Blk 721, originally planning to hit up Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu. But before we even sat down, we spotted another stall with quite a crowd. Ah Jie Hokkien Mee seemed to be pulling in customers left and right — steady stream of people ordering both dine-in and takeaway.

Naturally, we got curious. And hungry. So we decided to share a plate and see what all the fuss was about.

Simple Menu, Easy Choices

The menu at Ah Jie Hokkien Mee is straightforward. They only do Hokkien Mee in three sizes: $6, $8 and $10.

You can add extras like pork lard, pork belly, sotong, and prawn for additional charges. No complicated decisions here — just pick your size and your add-ons.

The Wait

Even with a bunch of orders ahead of us, the wait wasn’t too painful. About 15 minutes, maybe? They handed us a buzzer to collect our order, so we didn’t have to hover around the stall like vultures. Not too bad at all.

What the Hokkien Mee Was Like

Right, so the Hokkien mee arrived and it was the wetter kind. I’m talking properly soaked in rich prawn stock, with a gorgeous mix of yellow noodles and thick bee hoon. The savoury flavour hit immediately — you could taste that fresh, seafood-y essence in the broth straight away.

That Wok Hei Though

The wok hei was intense. Proper smoky and charred. The texture of the noodles was just right too — not too soft, not mushy, none of that overcooked nonsense. There was pork belly, sotong, and prawns mixed throughout, all nicely cooked and adding great texture to each bite.

Crispy Pork Lard is Life

On top sat these crispy pork lard pieces, plus a dollop of chilli and a calamansi lime on the side. Can we talk about that pork lard for a second? Super crispy and ridiculously satisfying. The texture and umami flavour just elevated the whole plate of Hokkien mee. So shiok, seriously.

Chilli and Lime Game Strong

The chilli packed a proper punch. When you mix it into the noodles with a squeeze of lime juice, everything gets that extra kick. But honestly? Even without the chilli and lime, the Hokkien mee was already delicious on its own. That broth is seriously, seriously rich.

Worth the Money?

The portion was decent for the price, especially for a single serving. But here’s the thing — next time, we’re getting a larger portion. Actually, scratch that. We’re not sharing anymore. One plate each, because this was too good to split.

Final Verdict on Ah Jie Hokkien Mee

Ah Jie Hokkien Mee turned out to be a really pleasant surprise. It’s one of the more intense and smoky versions you’ll find around Singapore. Just a very solid, satisfying plate that properly hits the spot — especially if you’re into the wetter style of Hokkien Mee.

Everything worked. The wok hei, the rich prawn stock, those crispy bits of pork lard on top. Definitely worth trying if you’re around Ang Mo Kio Central for lunch or running errands in the area. The coffeeshop at Blk 721 isn’t fancy or anything, but the Hokkien Mee here delivers.

We’ll be back. And next time, no sharing. You’ve been warned. 😉
