Awfully Chocolate Rum & Cherry Cake Review: Worth Every Spoonful

I asked hubby what cake he fancied for his birthday and he immediately said he wanted the Chocolate Banana Cake from Awfully Chocolate. Fair enough – seemed like a wise choice as we hadn’t had that for a long, long time and really kinda missed it.

But here’s where it gets interesting. While I was on their website placing the order, I discovered that Awfully Chocolate also had this Chocolate Rum & Cherry Cake which we’d never tried before. So I asked hubby a second time to confirm if he really wanted the banana one. Then he saw what I’d spotted, changed his mind completely and said he wanted the rum & cherry one instead. Haha, typical!

And yep, so I went ahead and ordered it.

Quick Heads Up About Ordering

Right, so if you’re planning to get an Awfully Chocolate cake, here’s what you need to know. You order via their website and collect at whichever outlet suits you best. Sounds straightforward, but there’s a catch.

They don’t stock whole cakes at every outlet for you to walk in and purchase on a whim. You’ve gotta place that online order beforehand. Bit of planning required, but honestly, it’s worth it.

The good bit? You can request wordings on the cake and a message on the gift card at no extra charge. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

Check their website to locate the Awfully Chocolate store nearest to you.

Collection Day at Tampines 1

I collected at their Tampines 1 outlet. The staff were brilliant – they took the cake out from the chiller and packaged it on the spot. No waiting around, just efficient service.

Now, I must say the packaging is absolutely top-notch. Looks really pretty and atas, very solid to hand carry too even though the carrier’s made from hard paper. The cake comes with a box of 5 gold candles, a cake knife and a Happy Birthday tag. Lovely touches that save you scrambling around last minute.

The Main Event: Chocolate Rum & Cherry Cake

Right, let’s talk numbers first:

  • 6-inch cake
  • Feeds 6-8 people (or 2 very greedy ones)
  • $50

First Impressions

That first bite? Pure chocolate bliss as usual. That’s just the kind of effect Awfully Chocolate cakes have on us, honestly. It’s moist, it’s fudgy, it’s oh so chocolatey.

Now, initially I thought the rum-soaked cherries would be overpowering in flavour. I’m not really a big fan of strong liquor flavours in my desserts, but it turned out perfectly subtle. Just enough to make things interesting without stealing the thunder from the chocolate. Mind you, if you’re proper into strong rum flavour, you might think this is too weak.

Let’s Talk About These Cherries

By the way, the cherries used in this cake are fresh pitted cherries that are still naturally sweet and juicy. Not those awful preserved cherries you get from some other places – you know the ones I mean. And they’re pretty generous with the amount too. I could almost bite into cherries with every mouthful of the cake.

We didn’t even bother slicing the cake up properly. We just dug in with spoons! Haha, don’t judge us.

The Sweet Spot

Overall, the sweetness level is bang on. Even though the cake looks so fudgy and rich, it’s not saccharine or cloying at all. You know how some chocolate cakes make you feel proper sick after a few bites? This one doesn’t do that at all.

Why We Keep Coming Back to Awfully Chocolate

Perfect cake, really. Awfully Chocolate just never disappoints, does it? There’s something about their chocolate game that’s just different from everyone else.

Look, I’ve tried loads of chocolate cakes around Singapore, and there’s always something that lets you down. Too sweet, too dry, dodgy cherries, whatever. But Awfully Chocolate? They’ve got this thing sorted.

This Chocolate Rum & Cherry Cake is proof they’re not just resting on their reputation. Fresh ingredients, balanced flavours, proper technique – it all comes together beautifully.

At fifty dollars for a cake that comfortably feeds 6-8 people, it’s actually decent value when you consider what you’re getting. Plus, the whole experience – from ordering to that gorgeous packaging – feels special without being pretentious.

So if you’re after a birthday cake that’ll actually impress without trying too hard, give this one a go. Just remember to order online first, yeah?

Happy birthday, LG! Love you lots! xoxo
