Basil King Review: This Pad Krapow Spot Does Fried Eggs Better Than Anyone

I was having pad krapow with my hubby the other day at One Punggol Hawker Centre. The dish came with a nicely fried egg – runny yolk, crispy bottom. He commented that he ordered the pad krapow because he wanted the egg. That’s when I remembered seeing Basil King on social media. They serve up pad krapow with similar style fried eggs. Showed him and he was excited to try.

Basil King Menu

Straightforward Basil King Menu

The menu at Basil King is very straightforward. Basically four types of protein: pork, chicken, beef and prawn. You just need to decide how many eggs you want (one to four) and then pick a spice level (five levels available).

What We Ordered

Basil King

Basil Pork With Quadruple Egg, Level 3 Spice ($9.90)

The pork was very flavoursome. Packed with punch. You can see chilli seeds throughout. Level 3 is just nice for me – not overly spicy, enjoyable kick.

But for hubby with a slightly lower spice tolerance? He went sweating like a tap. So yes, if you can’t take spice well, suggest going lowest level and work your way up.

Basil King

The highlight of the dish was definitely the egg. Looked so indulgent with those four yolks wobbling on top. When you cut through the yolks, that rich, creamy, runny egg yolk comes cascading down over the rice. Super shiok to eat.

The bottom of the egg was crispy too. Exactly the style of egg my hubby loves. He thoroughly enjoyed this dish. In fact, he said he didn’t even need the meat – he would be happy with just the eggs and rice, haha.

Basil King

Basil Beef With Triple Egg, Level 3 Spice ($10.90)

The beef on the other hand was quite bland in flavour. Need to add the chilli fish sauce to boost flavour.

Meat was sliced thin and was tender. Egg yolks were runny and delicious too. But the bottom of the egg had some burnt parts which tasted bitter.

Final Thoughts

All in all, very enjoyable meal at Basil King. Something different from your usual Thai food stall. Those indulgent fried eggs make it worth trying. Spice lovers will have a shiok time here. Oh, and they accept CDC vouchers too. 😉
