So I was accompanying my husband for his physio session at East Coast, and once he was done, we were both starving. Did a quick Google search for lunch spots nearby and Bites & Brews popped up. Figured we’d give it a shot.
First Impressions
We visited during Halloween, so the place was decked out with spooky decorations. Made for a fun atmosphere. Rolled in around 3pm on a weekday, so no reservation needed. The lunch crowd had cleared out – just three other tables occupied when we arrived.
They’ve got indoor air-conditioned seating and plenty of outdoor tables. We went for the aircon comfort because honestly, sitting outside in Singapore’s afternoon heat? No thanks.
Staff were friendly and efficient. The moment we sat down, menus appeared and they poured us water. What I really appreciated was how they kept refilling our glasses throughout the meal without us having to flag them down.
What We Ate at Bites & Brews
Prawn Toast – $15
The sourdough bread was impressively light and fluffy. They topped it with a prawn and chicken filling, though the sesame seeds really dominated the flavour.
My only gripe? The filling lacked texture. Would’ve been brilliant if they’d kept some chunks of prawn meat intact instead of blending everything smooth.
The spicy mayo sauce though – that had a proper fiery kick to it.
Grilled Cheese on Sourdough – Philly Cheesesteak ($26)
You can choose between fries or salad as your side. We went for fries, and they delivered. Crispy exterior, fluffy interior. They served the ketchup on the side.
Now, the sandwich itself was seriously cheesy. The beef was still pinkish and tender – cooked just right. The bread achieved that perfect balance of crispy outside and soft, fluffy inside. They’d added onions and mushrooms which added nice depth to each bite.
Mapo Tofu Lasagna – $25
This was the wildcard order. I mean, mapo tofu in a lasagna? Not something you see on every menu. I’ll be honest – it was a bit on the vinegary side, which isn’t how I’m used to eating mapo tofu. Could’ve used more spicy kick too. The spice level here was pretty mild.
That said, it wasn’t bad at all. The combination actually worked, even if it wasn’t traditional.
The Verdict on Bites & Brews
All in all, we enjoyed our meal at Bites & Brews. Love the chilled vibes of this restaurant bar. The food is generally good with some interesting fusion options on the menu, though I’ll say it’s on the pricey side.
Overall good experience. Worth a try if you haven’t been here yet.
