Bored Tacos Review: Why This Halal Mexican Spot Beat All My Expectations

What started as a durian run to Lexus Durian King turned into an unexpected feast at Bored Tacos. Hubby and I were wandering around the Kovan/Hougang area when we spotted this gem at Forte Bowl. One glance at their menu plastered on the glass door and plans changed instantly. Late lunch? Early dinner? Who cares when Mexican food calls.

The Setup

We walked in at 2:50pm on a Friday. Empty. Peaceful. Just us and the blessed air-conditioning. The space screams casual family dining – the kind where you can actually hear your tablemates speak. Perfect for gatherings without the pretence.

Bored Tacos is Muslim-owned, serving proper Mexican comfort food. Think nachos, tacos, quesadillas, burritos. They’ve got four outlets: Kovan/Hougang, Joo Chiat, Jalan Klapa, and Bedok.

How It Works

Scan the QR code. Order. Collect at counter when ready. Clear your own tray. Simple. No GST. No service charge. They accept CDC vouchers. What’s not to love?

What We Ordered at Bored Tacos

Lamb Tacos – $18 for 3 pieces

These tacos were genuinely the best I’ve had. Better than pricier Tex-Mex joints, honestly. Packed with filling. Every bite seriously meaty. The lamb? Zero gamey taste. Super cheesy too.

But here’s the game-changer: that accompanying consommé. It’s broth from slow-cooking their meats. Rich. Flavourful. Dip your tacos in and everything elevates. The shells start crunchy but soften over time – doesn’t ruin anything, but eat them first if you want that crunch.

Cajun Chicken Quesadillas – $12

Cheesy. Meaty. Tender chicken chunks throughout. Grab the red or green salsa from the counter – help yourself. That piquant kick makes everything more appetising.

Loaded Nachos – $14.90

Guacamole. Nacho sauce. Mayo. Tomato salsa. Lime wedge. Mountain of meat sauce. When they say loaded, they mean it. Share this. Attempting solo is madness. I got overwhelmed halfway through – too indulgently rich. But that’s comfort food, right?

Birria Beef Rice Bowl – $10.90

Hubby needed carbs before training. This delivered. Slow-cooked beef that oddly reminded me of beef rendang – probably similar spices. Mix everything with that consommé. So flavourful. Like eating nasi padang with gravy. Familiar yet different.

Final Thoughts on Bored Tacos

We enjoyed this meal thoroughly. The tacos especially blew my mind. Reasonable prices for quality you’d expect to pay more for elsewhere. Come with a group. Order variety. Share everything. That’s how you experience Bored Tacos properly. 😉
