We headed to Tampines 1 first because I had a craving for the Mont Blanc from Rive Gauche, but they didn’t have it. We turned around and saw Fieldnotes — a cake shop we’ve walked past so many times but never actually tried. Since we were already there, we thought, why not? And that’s how we ended up here.
What Is Fieldnotes?
Fieldnotes is a local cake shop with a distinct concept — all their cakes and tarts are inspired by nature. Think fruits, herbs, florals, and teas. The whole thing is very earthy and elegant, and the cakes genuinely look stunning. Very photogenic.

We Spotted a Deal
Just as we were trying to make up our minds, we noticed they had a bundle deal on — pick any 3 tarts or cakes (each priced at $9.50 and below) for $26. That’s a decent saving, so we went with 2 cakes and 1 tart.
What We Tried
Lychee Strawberry Rose $9.27
Cotton-soft sponge, layered with floral rose chantilly cream, strawberry slices, and lychee bits.
This one was not a great start, if I’m being honest. The sponge is soft and moist, and it’s not overly sweet — those are the good parts. But there’s a slight bitter aftertaste, and a strange perfume-y smell to it, almost like rose essence that’s been overdone. It put us off a little.
The strawberry was completely tasteless — not sweet, not sour, just nothing. And the lychee? We could barely taste it either. This cake honestly looks a lot prettier than it tastes.
Black Sesame Hōjicha $8.72
Light and soft black sesame sponge, layered with hōjicha chantilly and finished with black sesame chantilly cream.
The black sesame flavour comes through first, then the roasty hōjicha follows right behind. Unlike the Lychee Strawberry Rose, everything here tastes natural — no strange artificial notes, no overpowering florals. It’s nutty, aromatic, and not too sweet.
Lemon Meringue Tart $8.72
Tangy and lemony, on the sweeter side, with a biscuit-like crust.
It’s fine — it’s tangy, it’s lemony, it does what a lemon meringue tart is supposed to do. But honestly, it’s pretty average. The crust has a biscuit texture which is alright, but nothing about this really stood out to us. Not the best lemon meringue tart we’ve tried in Singapore.
Final Thoughts
All in all, we came away a little disappointed. The cakes at Fieldnotes look really beautiful and are absolutely photo-worthy — but in terms of taste, only the Black Sesame Hōjicha actually delivered. The rest just didn’t justify the price or the calories.
It’s the kind of place you visit once out of curiosity, and then you’ve done it. We probably won’t be going back. But if you do go, skip the Lychee Strawberry Rose and head straight for the Black Sesame Hōjicha — that one’s worth it.
