Heng Heng Ondeh Ondeh & Tapioca Cake has been my husband’s go-to spot for 15 years. Back when he worked near Maxwell Market, he’d grab their kueh during lunch for office tea breaks. They’d often sell out before closing time. COVID hit, work-from-home started, and we stopped visiting for ages.
One Saturday morning, we wandered around Chinatown. Hubby suggested Maxwell Market for sugarcane juice. At 11am, Heng Heng still had their full kueh selection available. We don’t come here often, so we grabbed more than usual.
Box of 5 Tapioca Cake + 4 Ondeh Ondeh ($8.20)
This is definitely one of the best steamed tapioca cake and ondeh ondeh I’ve had in Singapore.
The ondeh ondeh is seriously addictive. Pop the whole ball into your mouth. The gula melaka just bursts. Not saccharine sweet at all.
The tapioca cake at Heng Heng is incredibly soft. Not too sweet. Goes perfectly with the grated coconut on top.
Box of 4 Kueh Kosui ($3.50)
Soft, bouncy texture that I love. Not overly sweet. The gula melaka flavour comes through beautifully, aromatic without being cloying.
Box of 3 Ubi Kotoh ($3.30)
Made with mashed tapioca topped with grated coconut in gula melaka. Coarsely mashed, giving it excellent texture. You can really taste pure tapioca. Not too sweet. The grated coconut on top adds a nice crunch.
Spotted this white rooster just as we were leaving. And please, folks—let’s all do our part to keep the grounds clean!
