I’m keeping this one short today. Whenever I cross the Causeway to Johor Bahru, a stop at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee is non-negotiable. That means one thing: Hiap Joo Bakery. I covered this old-school bakery in my first Hiap Joo Bakery review, and I later explained why you need to try the Hiap Joo Coffee Cake.
On my latest visit, I spotted something new. Hiap Joo Bakery has refreshed its printed signage and menu. The best part? The prices haven’t budged. Not a single ringgit. So here’s the updated 2026 price list, the selling timetable and the storage rules. Now you’ll know exactly what to expect before you go.

Hiap Joo Bakery Selling Times: When to Go
Timing matters here. The limited bakes vanish fast, so plan your morning around them.
- Operating hours: Monday to Saturday, 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM
- Breads (limited): Monday to Saturday, from 11:45 AM
- Banana Cake: Fresh from 11:45 AM on Mondays. Fresh from 7:30 AM, Tuesday to Saturday.
- Butter & Coffee Cakes (limited): Tuesday to Friday, from 7:30 AM. They sell out fast!
- Sunday special: Banana cakes only, from 7:30 AM while stocks last. The shop closes once they run out.
Pro tip: Want the coffee cake? Turn up early, any day from Tuesday to Friday. Don’t roll in at noon and expect miracles.
Hiap Joo Bakery Freshness & Storage Tips
Hiap Joo skips the preservatives. That’s great for flavour, but you need to treat these bakes with care.
- Refrigerate everything: Pop your bread and cakes in the fridge once you get home.
- Eat within 3 days: They taste best fresh, so don’t hoard them.
- No exchanges, no refunds: For hygiene and food safety reasons, the bakery doesn’t take returns. Check your order before you leave.
My Hiap Joo Bakery Haul: Coffee Cake vs Banana Cake
I got lucky this trip and snagged both the Coffee Cake and the Banana Cake. Here’s my honest take.
Coffee Cake (RM 16) – Still the Undisputed No. 1
Open the box and the smell hits you straight away. Rich, roasted coffee. The crumb stays soft and beautifully moist. The top carries that signature finish from the wood-fired oven. The coffee flavour runs bold through every bite, but it never turns cloying.
Honestly? This is the best thing Hiap Joo makes. The coffee cake and the butter cake are the real stars here. They’re the only two I’ll keep coming back for.
Banana Cake (RM 13) – A Noticeable Drop
This one hurts to write. I used to swear by the signature banana cake. Sadly, the standard has slipped. This batch just didn’t deliver:
- Weak fragrance: I barely caught any banana aroma or natural sweetness.
- Missing richness: The buttery depth and comforting moisture that made it famous? Gone.
It’s still a decent old-school sponge. But I probably won’t buy it again on future visits.
Final Verdict: Is Hiap Joo Bakery Still Worth the Trip?
Yes, but order smart. My game plan for you:
- Skip the banana cake queue fatigue.
- Go early, any day from Tuesday to Friday.
- Grab the coffee cake and the butter cake.
Prices hold steady, the breads still offer solid value, and that coffee cake alone justifies braving the Causeway jam. Thank me later.
