Huang Hong Ji Porridge 黄洪记粥 sits underneath 269A Punggol Field and I’ve seen it countless times whenever we take the bus to Punggol Interchange. The place has been on my radar for ages. Finally, it was one of those days when my hubby and I felt like taking a break from our usual mixed rice stall in the kopitiam near us. We decided to walk over to Huang Hong Ji.
Simple Setup, Just Two Stalls
The setup is just like a regular kopitiam but there are only two stalls. One is Huang Hong Ji that sells porridge and fried bee hoon. The other stall sells drinks.
What We Ordered
Signature Porridge ($5.50)
I ordered the Signature Porridge, which was like an all-in-one porridge with a bit of everything. There were bits of sliced fish meat which had somewhat disintegrated in the porridge. It also had cuttlefish, pork meatballs, chicken meat, and shredded ginger. Finally topped with pieces of fried intestines.
The fried intestines were crispy but also tasted a bit gamey, so I wasn’t really a big fan of that. The porridge itself is smooth, a little on the bland side. But paired with the generous amount of ingredients, it’s actually a pretty tasty bowl of porridge.
I’m most impressed with the meatballs that are nicely seasoned and really flavourful.
Minced Pork + Century Egg Porridge ($4.30)
Though the name says ‘minced meat’, they are actually meatballs – the same as the ones in the Signature Porridge.
Hubby also agreed that the meatballs are delicious. They are not too finely processed, so they still retain that meaty bite.
Fried Bee Hoon with Fried Egg & Ngoh Hiang ($3.60)
Surprisingly good! The bee hoon itself was delicious and flavoursome, got a lot of wok hei. The chilli sauce quite shiok – got kick and not overly sweet or oily.
Fried egg wouldn’t go wrong. Ngoh hiang was not bad too.
We also ordered two Teh C Kosong Peng from the drinks stall. $1.90 per glass.
My Verdict
All in all, I think Huang Hong Ji is a pretty good eating place in the Punggol West neighbourhood. I wasn’t really expecting much, but the quality of the food turned out better than I thought. Prices are also reasonable.
It’s now one of those regular haunts we will be coming by often. Not flashy, not trendy, just good food at fair prices.
The fact that they focus on just porridge and bee hoon means they do these dishes properly. No massive menu trying to please everyone – just solid execution of what they know best. 😉
