IKEA Salted Egg Chicken Wings & Curly Fries Review: CNY Special Worth Trying?

When the IKEA CNY brochure landed in my mailbox, one item immediately grabbed my attention: IKEA Salted Egg Chicken Wings. My husband and I are huge salted egg fans—we love anything salted egg. Since I was already planning to pop by IKEA last week to check out their festive cookies, we figured why not just have dinner there too?

Curly Fries with Salted Egg Sauce Dip — $4.80

The curly fries are pretty good on their own. They taste like those frozen packs you get from the supermarket—already pre-seasoned and all. I think we got lucky because our batch was fresh, so they were still nice and crispy.

Now, the salted egg sauce looks like it’s got potential. You can see the curry leaves in there, and the sauce itself is quite thick and creamy. But…it’s missing that signature salted egg aroma. Plus, it’s a little on the sweet side.

Fried Chicken Wings with Salted Egg Sauce — $4.80 (2 pcs), $8.80 (4 pcs), $10.80 (6 pcs)

Here’s what I liked about the preparation. The staff actually takes the chicken wings (same ones as the regular menu), tosses them in a big metal bowl with the salted egg sauce right there, gives it a good mix, and then plates it up for you. So it’s kind of made-to-order rather than sitting there pre-sauced and getting all soggy.

Normally, the regular IKEA chicken wings are pretty plain—you know, that old school, traditional, my-grandma-would-make-at-home style that you’d eat with chilli sauce. So I actually quite liked the pairing with the salted egg sauce because it gave the wings extra flavour and that creamy richness.

The chicken wings we got that day were quite sizeable and meaty too, which was a nice bonus.

Final Thoughts

Not the best salted egg chicken wings I’ve ever had, but honestly not bad at all considering the price. At $10.80 for 6 pieces, that works out to only $1.80 per wing. The curly fries are decent too, though the sauce could use more oomph.

If you’re planning to head to IKEA soon anyway, I’d say swing by the restaurant for lunch or dinner and give these salted egg dishes a try. They’re worth checking out, especially if you’re already there furniture hunting. 🙂
