One of the top things on our York hit list was the JORVIK Viking Centre. I’d heard the word “Vikings” thrown around plenty of times but honestly knew next to nothing about them. So this felt like the perfect crash course. My sister-in-law had also been raving about the place after taking the kids there, so expectations were high.
What Exactly Is the JORVIK Viking Centre?
Here’s the cool bit. The JORVIK Viking Centre sits directly on top of a real 10th-century Viking city that was excavated at Coppergate between 1976 and 1981. Using everything archaeologists dug up, the team recreated the settlement that once stood on that exact spot 1,000 years ago. You’re not just reading about Viking York—you’re walking through it.

First Impressions: The Underground Entry
Staff dressed in full Viking garb greet you at the entrance, which already sets the mood nicely. After scanning your QR code tickets, you head downstairs because—fun fact—this is an underground museum.
First stop is the gallery, where the floor is made of see-through glass showing part of the original excavation site beneath your feet. A Viking-clad staff member gives a quick intro to the museum and a brief on Viking archaeology. Short, sweet, and sets you up nicely for what’s coming.
The Ride: The Star of the Show
This is where the JORVIK Viking Centre really delivers. You hop into a ride capsule, select your commentary language on the touchscreen in front, and off you go through a recreated Viking-age York.
The replicas are seriously life-like. You get the sights, the sounds, and—brace yourself—the smells. They’ve used artificial scents to recreate burnt wood, fish, leather hide, church incense, molten iron, and more. It’s pungent at first. A bit off-putting, if I’m honest. But you do get used to it, and it adds a whole layer of realism.
Heads up: there’s a real-life actor on a boat at one point who’ll wave or chat to you as you glide past. Don’t get startled like I nearly did.
The whole ride takes about 16 minutes.

It’s surprising to see a 1,000-year-old human faeces preserved as an artefact—how did it even survive all this time?
After the Ride: Galleries & Artefacts
Once you disembark, you’re free to explore the galleries at your own pace. Highlights include:
- Tons of genuine Viking artefacts on display
- Coinstrike station—get a replica Viking coin struck for £2 (expect a queue, it’s popular)
- Gift shop on the way out if you’re after souvenirs
Is It Worth Your Time?
Honestly? Absolutely. The ride was my favourite bit—it almost feels like a theme park attraction but with actual historical substance. The recreated Viking village is brilliantly done, and you genuinely feel transported back a thousand years.
We spent about 45 minutes in total, skipping a few exhibits. If you’re the type who reads every single display panel, block out at least an hour or more.
Final Verdict
The JORVIK Viking Centre is fun, educational, and very reasonably priced for what you get. Kids will love it, adults will learn something new, and everyone walks out knowing a whole lot more about Vikings than they did walking in. Highly recommend adding this to your York itinerary.
