Loong Fatt Tau Sar Piah was my first tau sar piah love 15 years ago. It’s still my number one today. Back then, each pastry cost just $0.60. Now it’s $1.30. The price has more than doubled, but honestly? Still worth every cent and every calorie!
I wrote about Loong Fatt Tau Sar Piah on my blog a decade ago. The taste hasn’t changed one bit. That’s rare in Singapore’s ever-evolving food scene. Never once have I left disappointed.
Sweet or Salty? Just Get Both
I can never pick between sweet and salty tau sar piah at Loong Fatt. Both hit differently. So I always grab a box of each to enjoy at home with tea.
What makes their tau sar piah special:
- Thinner than most – not bulky or overwhelming
- Crust stays crispy – they bake fresh batches throughout the day
- Never stale – you get warm pastries straight from the oven, not ones sitting in display cases for hours
The filling is compact and tasty. Sweet isn’t too sweet. Salty isn’t too salty. Everything’s balanced and always on point.
The Hidden Gem: Old School Cakes
When I visited recently, the queue was as long as ever, and the tau sar piah was selling out fast. By the time it was my turn, I had to wait for a fresh batch to come out of the oven. While waiting, I noticed some old school cakes on display at the counter.
The prices? Nothing costs more than $1.80. The menu displays everything clearly. Not every item is available all the time though. Some flavours sell out quick. It all depends on your luck what’s left when you get there.
Don’t grab the cakes yourself, even though they’re displayed openly. Tell the staff what you want. They’ll pack everything into a box for you.
Old School Cakes That Taste Like Childhood
I picked up four different types: Buttercream Swiss Roll Cake, Banana Cake, Butter Cake and Chocolate Rice Cupcake.
All tasted brilliant. These are proper traditional old-school cakes that brought back childhood memories. So nostalgic.
The cakes were soft and fluffy (not dry at all!) and had that rich, buttery fragrance.
Besides Hiap Joo in JB, I can’t think of anywhere else in Singapore that does such old school cakes anymore.
Why Did I Wait This Long?
I’ve been visiting Loong Fatt for tau sar piah for 15 years. Why did I only try the old school cakes now? Big mistake.
If you’re like me and have only been getting their tau sar piah, remember to grab some cakes next time. You won’t regret it.
Loong Fatt Tau Sar Piah proves that consistent quality never goes out of style. The pastries remain crispy and fresh. The old school cakes taste like a trip down memory lane. Even with the price increase, everything’s still affordable and delicious.
