Messina Singapore: The Gelato That Lives Up To The Hype

We were on a mini staycation at Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre on Club Street, and honestly… how could we not swing by Messina when it’s literally right next door?

The moment we walked in, we were greeted by the friendliest staff who encouraged us to sample anything we liked. No pressure, no rush — just pure, wholesome gelato enthusiasm.

After some sampling (which was honestly so fun), my husband and I made our picks.

We went for 3 scoops each at $14 per cup. Because why not, right? Why settle for one scoop when you can have three?

My Picks

Kaya Toast – This one’s my absolute favourite. It’s truly kaya toast in gelato form. The kaya taste really stands out, and there are toasted bread chunks that add such good texture to the gelato. I’m seriously impressed that they managed to turn one of our iconic breakfast items into such a beautiful gelato.

Because it’s a Singapore-exclusive flavour, I highly recommend everyone gives this a try. You won’t find this flavour elsewhere.

Panna Cotta with Fig Jam & Amaretti – I chose this because I love panna cotta, and I really liked how balanced this flavour was. It’s not overwhelming, yet you can taste the different elements – the panna cotta base, the fig jam, and the nice texture of amaretti biscuits. They all complement one other perfectly.

Hokey Pokey – I must say, I’m not a big fan of honey itself, but this honey gelato is really light and refreshing. I really like the bits of chocolate-covered honeycomb too. Fun fact: Messina produces their own honey in Victoria, and it’s unadulterated, raw and cold-pressed. Quality stuff there!

Moving To My Husband’s Picks

Macadamia Crunch – This is caramelised white chocolate and macadamia gelato with macadamia crunch. I love this way better than Häagen-Dazs Macadamia Nut ice cream. There’s this lovely nutty macadamia flavour, and the crunch really adds depth to the texture.

Super Dulce De Leche – I knew my husband would get this because it tasted so caramel-ly. Messina makes their own dulce de leche in-house, which is an Argentinean caramelised milk. While they have the regular Dulce De Leche flavour, this Super version is up one notch – even more caramelly. My husband loves it, but I just find it too sweet for my liking.

Yolk’s On You – Another Singapore-exclusive flavour, and again, I’m impressed. It’s really like taking the salted egg yolk filling from a liu sha bao and turning it into gelato. The salted egg yolk flavour is so intense and fragrant. I really never expected salted egg yolk would work this well in gelato. Sweet and savoury, really good!

What Makes Messina Special

The flavour itself is exquisite and delicious, but it’s the texture of the gelato that really has us hooked. Rich, smooth, intense, with a good balance of sweetness. Totally indulgent. That’s how good gelato should be. One mouthful makes you go ‘mmmmmmm’. So, so comforting.

Now I totally understand why there’s so much hype about Messina because it is AWESOME.

Is Messina Worth The Price?

Price-wise, I must say it’s not cheap for gelato. But I think it’s worth every cent because the taste of the different gelato flavours really reflects the quality of ingredients. The gelato here is Michelin-standard in my opinion.

For $14 for 3 scoops, the scoop sizes are huge and more than enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. We finished every bit of it and didn’t feel overwhelmed because Messina knows exactly how to balance flavours. I think that’s the most crucial thing in making desserts while making sure it’s still indulgent and comforting for everyone of all ages to enjoy.

The best thing is, Messina makes everything from scratch – the pastes, spreads, toppings and so on. No shortcuts, simply passion put into their gelato.

Service That Stands Out

A shoutout to the wonderful staff at Messina for being so welcoming, warm and friendly. While we were sitting down enjoying our gelato, we saw a family coming in. The little boy was too short and couldn’t see the ice cream flavours on the counter, so one of the staff brought out a stool for him to stand on. Such a simple gesture, but so thoughtful.

As we got up to leave, the staff still thanked us and said goodbye. Keep up the great service, guys!

Would We Go Back To Messina?

My husband and I walked out totally satisfied — and already talking about what we’re going to try next time. There are still so many flavours we haven’t even touched yet, and after tasting what Messina can do, we’re definitely coming back for round two.

If you’re around Club Street, do yourself a favour and swing by Messina. Their Singapore-exclusive flavours, Kaya Toast and Yolk’s On You, are absolute must-tries. Trust me, your taste buds will be very, very happy. 😉
