Pretty Good Muffins Review: Are They Actually Pretty Good?

Last time I passed by Pretty Good Muffins at Hong Lim Complex during peak lunch hours, the queue was ridiculously long. Made a mental note to return, and finally got my chance during a mini staycation at Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre. Showed up Saturday morning around 10.40am, even though they’re meant to open at 11am. All the muffins were already out, people buying, no long queue.

Just cross the connecting bridge from the food centre to Hong Lim Complex—you’ll find Pretty Good Muffins there.

Apparently the Banana Pudding Matcha is one of their best sellers.

All muffin flavours on display.

Pretty humble of them to say they’re not the best… unfortunately, I didn’t find the muffins pretty good either 😅

Staff were friendly. Grabbed a box of 6 different flavours to properly test them out.

Pistachio

The top layer isn’t cream – it’s more like chocolate at room temperature, slightly firm. Pistachio hint is there but barely, overpowered by sweetness. The chocolate base muffin is soft and spongy but lacks moisture and butter. Texture reminds me of baked huat kueh rather than a proper muffin. First bite? Disappointing.

Mars

There’s a melty Mars piece inside, which tastes fine because Mars never disappoints. But the vanilla base muffin? Cannot make it. Just doesn’t work.

Nutella Sea Salt

Nutella rarely goes wrong, and yes, I tasted some sea salt. But honestly, it doesn’t elevate anything. Pretty standard.

Apple

Contains apple bits, raisins, slight cinnamon hint. Only sprinkled on top though. Doesn’t really add much excitement to the muffin base.

Matcha White Chocolate

Not much matcha flavour, zero aroma. Surprised when I saw a Facebook video where the boss claims they use premium grade matcha from Japan. Seriously? White chocolate chips only appear on top, taste sweet but don’t deliver any indulgent chocolate flavour. The matcha muffin base is even drier than the others.

Choc Cream Cheese

Not amazing on its own, but if I had to pick a favourite, this would be it. The cream cheese isn’t sweet, carries a slight tangy cheesiness that gives the muffin some depth.

Final Verdict on Pretty Good Muffins

All the muffin bases let me down. When basics aren’t solid, no amount of toppings can save them. Speaking of toppings and fillings – they’re miserable in quantity and quality. Everything tastes quite low-grade, except the Mars and Nutella which hold up simply because established brands rarely fail.

Yes, Pretty Good Muffins prices are more affordable than other muffin brands in Singapore. But for this taste and ingredient quality? Not worth the money or calories. Doesn’t give me that comfort feeling I expect from muffins or desserts. Won’t be returning.

I’ll stick with Butter & Cream and AJ Delights for my muffin fix instead.
