The Saigon Review: Vietnamese Goodness in Punggol That Actually Delivers

The Saigon caught us on one of those days when we were properly sick of our usual Punggol haunts. You know the feeling – same old kopitiams, same old hawker centres, same old everything. A quick Google search led us to this Vietnamese stall tucked inside Foodgle Coffeeshop at 308C Punggol Walk, just five minutes from Waterway Point.

What You Need to Know About The Saigon

The Saigon runs as a one-man operation. We rocked up around 2.20pm on a weekday with zero queue, but still waited a good while after ordering. Peak hours? You’re probably looking at an even longer wait. Fair warning.

Here’s What We Ordered:

Chargrilled Pork Chop with Rice Vermicelli ($8.80)

This bowl delivers serious freshness. The pickled radish and carrot bring proper crunch alongside the lettuce and cucumber. The pork chop isn’t melt-in-your-mouth tender, but the smoky char makes up for it. Roasted peanuts add extra nuttiness to each bite.

They hide thick bee hoon at the bottom under all the toppings. The fried spring roll packs meat tightly inside a crispy shell. The chilli sauce? It’s got kick and that distinct fish sauce fragrance. Add it generously because the dish needs that punch – otherwise it’s plain.

French Loaf with Chargrilled Pork Chop ($7.20)

This banh mi shocked us. The Saigon stuffs so much chargrilled pork inside that you can barely see the veggies underneath. For $7.20, this is probably the most loaded banh mi we’ve had in Singapore.

The baguette shatters when you bite – proper crispy. We dipped ours in the chilli sauce for moisture and that spicy kick. Game changer.

Chargrilled Pork Chop Rice

The pork tastes like saltier char siew with smoky notes running through it. The egg underneath comes with a crispy fried bottom whilst the yolk stays runny. Simple but effective.

The Verdict on The Saigon

The Saigon serves honest Vietnamese food without fuss. Portions are generous. Prices won’t hurt your wallet. The one-man show means waiting is part of the deal. Plus, they accept CDC vouchers – always a bonus for Singaporeans.

Worth the walk from Waterway Point when you need something different from your regular rotation. 🙂
