The Summer Acai Review: Our New Punggol Obsession

Acai bowls are my weakness, especially on those lazy, humid Singapore afternoons when cooking feels like a chore and I just want something cold and refreshing. For years, An Acai Affair at Waterway Point was my Punggol go-to (basically the only game in town back then). But ever since The Summer Acai opened at One Punggol, my husband and I have a new obsession. We’re talking 1-2 bowls a week, easy.

The Summer Acai at One Punggol

Why The Summer Acai Has Stolen Our Hearts

The Summer Acai outlet at One Punggol is a small, cosy corner spot. When we popped by, it was mostly students hunched over books and laptops. Ordering is fuss-free — just scan the QR code on the table and you’re sorted.

Their menu is fun, with pre-set bowls sporting cheeky names like You-Gurt An Affair?! and Squeeze My Coconuts. If you’re picky like me, you can DIY your own bowl from scratch. They also do smoothies, coffee and a matcha series, so there’s something for everyone.

The Delivery Game Is Strong

Before the One Punggol outlet opened, we used to order from their Rivervale Plaza branch via Foodpanda. Here’s what impressed me: even when the rider made an extra stop before reaching us, our bowls still arrived icy cold. Twice in a row, perfect condition. They must have frozen the acai really hard before sending it out. Compare that to delivery from other acai spots that turn up melted and watery — Summer Acai wins this round.

My Go-To DIY Bowl

I always order the medium DIY bowl, and here’s my usual combo:

  • Base: Acai
  • Fruits: Strawberry, peach (they use canned, which I love), plus one more if you dine in
  • Sauce: Nutella
  • Crunch: Lotus Biscoff bits

What I really appreciate is the level of customisation:

  • Sauce portion: 0%, 50% or 100% — great for cutting down the sweetness
  • Granola: Add or skip (it’s nuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds)
  • Superfoods: Add or skip (cacao nibs, chia seeds, coconut flakes)

The Summer Acai Medium DIY Bowl

Fun observation: when you dine in, the medium DIY bowl gives you 3 fruits instead of 2 on the delivery app. Not sure if that’s a typo on the app or just a dine-in perk, but worth knowing!

Hubby’s Picks

My husband always goes for the pre-fixed bowls. His current favourite is Bust My Nuts — very banana-y, very nutty, exactly his vibe. But he switches up depending on his mood.

The Summer Acai Kyoku Matcha

Recently he tried the Kyoku Matcha (acai sorbet, matcha gelato, grapes, strawberry, blueberry, Oreo, granola and superfoods) and it was a winner.

Bowl vs Cup: The Real Difference

Hubby made a sharp observation comparing The Summer Acai to An Acai Affair: at Summer Acai, the bowls really are bowls. Toppings sit on top of a wide acai base, so every spoonful gets a bit of everything. An Acai Affair serves theirs in cups, meaning all the toppings pile at the top. Different vibes, both valid — but we much prefer the bowl format. It’s honestly one of the biggest reasons we switched.

Healthy? Well, Sort Of…

Let’s be real: acai bowls aren’t exactly a salad. Once you load up on Nutella and Biscoff, the “healthy” label goes out the window. But hey, at least it gets us eating more fruit while satisfying our sweet tooth. We’ve definitely been overindulging lately, so we’re trying to dial it back. Trying being the operative word.

If you haven’t tried The Summer Acai yet, do yourself a favour and grab a bowl. On a hot, sticky Singapore day, there’s truly nothing more refreshing.
