I used to be a medium-doneness person. Always. Steak came to the table and I’d ask for it cooked through enough that nothing looked too pink, let alone red. Then Japan happened. One rare roast beef bowl at Red Rock later, and my whole stance collapsed. Now I’m chasing that soft, blushing pink beef everywhere I go — which is exactly how I ended up at Japanese Steak Bowl & Beef Curry, better known as Center Beef, after a Xiaohongshu rabbit hole.
We’d had a light breakfast that morning — a ridiculously cute sleeping bear cake at Luna Cafe & Laundry near our hotel — so lunch needed to be substantial. A steak rice bowl felt right.
What is Japanese Steak Bowl & Beef Curry (Center Beef)?
Center Beef does two things, and does them properly: steak rice bowls and beef curry. That’s the whole premise. No fuss, no 12-page menu.
The original flagship sits in Yokohama — 1F Kure Building, 2-5-1 Suehirocho, Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa 231-0046. There’s no official website listing every branch, which makes tracking them down slightly annoying. Here’s what I’ve pieced together from Google Maps:
- 3-7-7 Shibuya, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0002
- 3-14-22 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 160-0022
- 1F Dogenzaka Building, 5-4 Maruyamacho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0044
- 1F, 2-1-1 Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo 171-0014
- 1F Kobayashi Daini Building, 8-14-19 Nishishinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 160-0023
- 1F, 3-7-3 Kamimeguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo 153-0051
- 1F Kiriya Building, 2-12 Kanda Sakumacho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 101-0025
- 1F Atre Kichijoji (East Building), 2-1-10 Kichijoji Minamicho, Musashino-shi, Tokyo 180-0003
- 1F Mimatsu Building, 1-4-17 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo 107-0062
- 1F Takigen Building, 1-24-1 Nishigotanda, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo 141-0031
One heads-up. On Google Maps the outlets appear under different names — Japanese Steak Bowl & Beef Curry, Steak Rice & Curry Restaurant, Center Beef. Same logo, same menu, same brand. The inconsistency comes down to auto-translated Japanese names. Don’t let it confuse you.
We went to the Shibuya Miyamasuzaka outlet, which has since closed and relocated to 3-7-7 Shibuya.
Turning up early pays off
We arrived just before opening. Only one other customer stood ahead of us. Staff ushered us in and we took counter seats. Someone comes over to take your order, and you pay at the counter after eating.
The menu has English. Staff understood our English orders without any drama. Open kitchen too, so you get a front-row view of the chefs working the grill. Within minutes of opening, the place filled up completely. Go early.
How to build your steak bowl at Center Beef
This is where the fun starts. You customise in three steps:
- Meat portion: small, medium, large, XL or mega
- Rice: white, garlic, bacon basil, or salad rice
- Toppings: raw egg, fried garlic, butter cream, raw garlic slices, soft-boiled egg, onion slices, salad, mashed potato, coleslaw, powdered cheese, carrot glaze, boiled broccoli, curry
I went with a medium steak bowl, garlic rice, onion slices, fried garlic, mashed potato and butter cream. The customisation is genuinely useful — you can load up on veg and build something reasonably balanced, or go full indulgent. Your call.
Why the Japanese Steak Bowl & Beef Curry crowd keeps coming back
First thing I noticed: the beef portion is generous. So much piled on top that I couldn’t see the rice underneath. That’s exactly how I like my rice bowls — less rice, more everything else.
The beef comes out reddish-pink inside. You can’t pick your doneness — it’s cooked one way here, full stop. It isn’t the melt-in-your-mouth sort. But it isn’t tough or chewy either. Tender, juicy, and just right.
The garlic butter rice deserves its own mention. Deep, aromatic, properly savoury. It carries the whole bowl.
But the toppings are the real trick:
- Onion slices — crunch and a clean palate reset between bites
- Butter cream — surprisingly light, never cloying, with a subtle sweetness
- Mashed potato — smooth, creamy, comforting
- Fried garlic slices — fragrant and addictive
Get a bit of everything into one mouthful and that’s when it clicks. Every element plays off the others. The toppings work like flavour enhancers, turning a straightforward rice bowl into something far more indulgent. Rich, comforting, deeply satisfying. Completely my kind of meal.
Don’t skip the sauces
Two bottles sit on the counter for you to help yourself:
- Center Sauce — their signature onion-soy base, sweet and savoury
- Radish Sauce — lighter, cleaner, more refreshing
There’s also a small jar of spicy onion sauce if you want a bit of heat.
The Steak and Beef Curry
Hubby ordered the curry with a small portion of steak on top — best of both worlds. It arrived with melted cheese too.
This isn’t the sweet, mellow Japanese curry most of us know. It leans spiced and fragrant, with a bolder backbone. Exactly what he wanted. If you find standard Japanese curry too sweet, this one will suit you better.
Worth adding to your Tokyo list?
Yes. Prices are reasonable, portions are honest, and the whole build-your-own approach makes it easy to eat exactly what you fancy. If you’ve never had a steak rice bowl like this, put Japanese Steak Bowl & Beef Curry (Center Beef) on your Tokyo to-eat list. And arrive before opening — the queue builds fast.
