June Bakery has been on my must-visit list forever, but their weekday-only hours and sell-out tendencies made it nearly impossible to try. Finally managed to snag some of their legendary tarts during a staycation at PARKROYAL on Beach Road – and now I understand the hype.
Finding June Bakery
Staying at PARKROYAL on Beach Road? You’ve hit the jackpot. June Bakery sits right at your doorstep like a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.
Head towards Si Chuan Dou Hua Restaurant from the hotel lobby. Look left and you’ll spot a path leading to The Plaza behind the hotel. Take the spiral staircase down to B1 and you’ll see June Bakery.
The Reality of June Bakery’s Popularity
Arriving at 11am felt strategic. Wrong move. Only four tart varieties remained on the shelves. The black sesame, cheese, and peanut mochi had vanished into thin air.
Stacks of pre-packed tart boxes lined one side of the shop. Classic June Bakery scene – they’re the go-to for group buys, which explains the rapid disappearing act.
Pro tip: Arrive early or face disappointment
The Uncle Who Made My Day
The uncle behind the counter deserves special mention. Genuinely friendly and patient, he explained each tart flavour since there were no labels. Every tart costs $1.60 regardless of type. Cash only – no exceptions.
What I Managed to Snag
Yam Paste Tart
Their bestseller lives up to expectations. Thick, creamy yam paste crowned with ginkgo nuts creates magic in your mouth. The sweetness hits just right – not overwhelming, not bland.
You taste actual yam bits, not that processed smoothness some places serve. Orh nee lovers will absolutely worship this creation. The tart crust brings salty, buttery biscuit vibes without being thick or heavy.
Egg Tart
Forget wobbly custard expectations. June Bakery serves firmer custard packed with proper egg fragrance. This hits different – in the best possible way.
Apple Crumble Tart
Real apple pieces provide satisfying crunch throughout each bite. The fruit shines through without sugar overload. Streusel topping adds textural contrast that works beautifully with the apple chunks.
Strawberry Cheese Mochi Tart
This combination sounds uncommon but tastes incredible. Strawberry and cheese flavours dance together without fighting for dominance. The silky soft mochi underneath elevates everything to another level.
Honestly became my favourite among all four varieties.
June Bakery: My Honest Verdict
These tarts deliver serious quality. They won’t win Instagram beauty contests against fancy bakery displays, but taste trumps presentation every time. This represents old-school, traditional baking that never goes out of style.
At $1.60 per tart in prime CBD location, June Bakery keeps prices ridiculously affordable. Most Singapore bakeries charge double for similar quality.
The Operating Hours Challenge
Here’s the frustrating part: accessing these tarts requires serious planning. Weekday hours until 2.30pm (or sold out) make visits nearly impossible unless you work nearby.
Office workers in the area hit the lottery. Everyone else needs to carve out special time for June Bakery visits. The effort pays off, but availability remains genuinely challenging.
What Makes June Bakery Special
This place proves traditional bakeries deserve space in Singapore’s evolving food landscape. No Instagram-worthy presentations or trendy flavours – just solid, tasty tarts that remind you why classics become classics.
Singapore needs more places like June Bakery: unpretentious, affordable, laser-focused on delivering excellent food without unnecessary fuss.
Planning your next CBD food adventure? Factor in June Bakery’s quirky hours, bring cash, and prepare for seriously satisfying traditional tarts that prove good food doesn’t need fancy packaging.
