We were staying at PARKROYAL on Beach Road and decided to walk over to Golden Mile Food Centre after breakfast. The original plan was to pick up pastries from Cat In The Hat for tea later — but you know how it goes at a hawker centre. You start walking around, something catches your eye, and suddenly the plan changes.
Spotted someone tucking into what looked like oyster cakes doused in chilli sauce. Looked so good we went hunting for the stall. Found Oyster Boy 蠔小子.
What They Sell
Two types of oyster cake — Original and Prawn — at $3 each. Simple as that. We got one of each.
Prawn Cake
Took one bite and immediately fell in love with the exterior. Seriously crunchy and crispy, the kind that makes a sound when you bite into it. Yes, it’s oily and indulgent — but when you eat it fresh and hot, it’s absolutely worth it.
What’s in the filling?
I was expecting just chopped up prawn meat but I was wrong. There were several whole prawn pieces inside — not huge, but enough to give you that satisfying bite. The filling also has pork and Chinese celery in it. It’s a little on the salty side but big on flavour. The chilli sauce that comes with it is decent too — gives a nice spicy kick to round everything off.
Original Oyster Cake
Same as the prawn version but with oyster meat in the filling. That alone takes it up a notch. The oysters add an extra level of umami and really enhance that seafood flavour. Best part? They tasted fresh — no unwanted fishiness at all.
Not an oyster person? Don’t worry.
If you normally avoid oysters because of the taste or texture, this one might surprise you. The oysters blend into the filling well enough that it doesn’t overwhelm. The filling also has whole prawn pieces in it, same as the prawn version.
So Is Oyster Boy Worth It?
Honestly, really good oyster cakes. Easily one of the better ones you can find in Singapore — probably as good as, if not better than, Maxwell Fuzhou Oyster Cake and Sixth Floor Oyster Cake. That’s saying something.
It’s not something you’d eat a lot of in one sitting since it’s deep fried and pretty oily, but it’s definitely worth the calories for an occasional indulgence. If you’re already at Golden Mile Food Centre, do yourself a favour and check out Oyster Boy 蠔小子 — especially if you’re into fried snacks.
