True Breakfast 初早餐: Taiwanese Comfort Food at Capitol Singapore

After checking out from Pullman Singapore Hill Street, we weren’t ready to head home just yet. Lunch first. We walked over to Capitol, stomachs rumbling, and decided on True Breakfast 初早餐 for some Taiwanese comfort food.

First Impressions

We arrived just after 11am. The place was empty. Staff welcomed us warmly. We sat down, scanned the QR code, and browsed their menu. Despite the name, True Breakfast serves an all-day menu. However, toast is only available until 5pm.

The Drinks: A Letdown

Every main dish comes with a $1 add-on drink option. We customised our drinks to ‘kosong’ (no sugar), our standard preference.

Iced Black Tea: Expected authentic Taiwanese black tea. Got local Teh O instead. Disappointing.

Milk Tea: Tasted like Teh C with evaporated milk. Not what we hoped for.

Maybe our expectations were too high. The teas at True Breakfast simply didn’t deliver.

The Food: Where True Breakfast Shines

Hashbrown & Bacon Omelette ($9.30)

First time having this dan bing combo. Crispy hashbrown and salty bacon. Pair it with their chilli and sweet sauce – even better.

Simple, straightforward, comforting. I need to recreate this at home!

True Breakfast’s Signature Toast ($13.80)

This sandwich packs everything. Tender pork chop, fried luncheon meat, pork floss, egg, cheese, peanut butter.

Each element stood out individually. Yet somehow, they worked together beautifully. Sweet, savoury, umami – all in one bite. Seriously satisfying.

Braised Pork Rice ($7)

Homely and comforting. The braised pork had a good meat-to-fat ratio. Texture was spot on. Not overly salty. However, my husband felt it needed more braising sauce. The pork-to-rice ratio could be higher too.

Taiwanese Chicken Chop Rice ($10.80)

This took quite some time to arrive. Clearly freshly fried upon order. The chicken chop was excellent. Crispy outside, juicy inside. The white rice, though? Disappointing. Lacked the fragrance of Taiwan pearl rice.

Final Verdict

True Breakfast delivered a decent meal. Not amazing, but good enough when you’re craving Taiwanese food. The hashbrown and bacon dan bing and signature toast are standout items. They’re better than what you’d find at other Taiwanese eateries in Singapore.

Skip the teas. Go for the toast and dan bing. You won’t regret it. 🙂
