What to buy from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia? Zhang Village & Kee Heong

It’s so strange as I had been to KL many times for business but I had never taken notice of anything (food) interesting to bring home to Singapore. Maybe that’s what happens during work trips – everything else seems so unexciting, lol.

Anyway, the husband had to work on a mega project which he had to travel to KL for in the past couple of months. And while he was there during his first trip, his colleague recommended him this fish snack (like keropok) from the brand, Zhang Village (張家莊) which was just yummy. So now whenever he headed to KL, he would always bring some back for us to snack on.

Besides the fish snack, Zhang Village also sells biscuits, cookies, Chinese traditional confectioneries, coconut candy, anchovies, cuttlefish, pineapple tarts, preserved fruits, sauces, crackers and many more CNY style cookies.

The anchovies were so crispy and came in two flavours – satay or sesame (RM7.90 or S$3.00 per pack). A great condiment to go with plain porridge, stir fry with vegetables or just munch it as a snack.

The plait cookies (RM5.90 or S$2.20 per pack) were nicely fried to crisp too and weren’t overly oily. No trace of reused oil smell too. I kept them in the fridge for a couple of days and they still tasted fresh and good.

The fish snack that I mentioned earlier was labelled as BBQ Fish Flavour (RM10.90 or S$4.10 per can) that came in long tubular cans. Not exactly cheap for just keropok seasoned with some BBQ powder but the price definitely included that neat packaging which made them perfect as gifts. They were so addictive and good!

Another highly recommended product would be the Brown Rice Cracker with Sesame (RM6.90 or $2.60 per pack). The puffed rice were so light, crispy and fragrant. I love!

Good news is, if you often visit JB, you can head to their outlet (it’s a kiosk, not a shop) at KSL City Mall to purchase these snacks.

What to buy from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia? Kee Heong

Sachima or Honey Comb Cookie is a traditional snack that I love since I was little but finding one that tastes good, isn’t too oily and doesn’t have reused oil smell isn’t a small feat. When a friend came back from KL some time ago and brought me sachima from Kee Heong, I knew I had found my number one. So fragrant, so eggy, so addictive. Loved the chewiness and the crunch.

And it is perfect that Kee Heong’s retail outlet (kiosk, not shop) is located at Mid Valley Megamall because that’s where the husband was for work. I told him I only wanted the Original (RM6 or S$2.30) flavour but he said he had tried samples of others and he liked those too so he bought Black Sesame (RM7 or S$2.60) and Puffed Rice (RM6 or S$2.30) as well. He was given a smaller pack of original for free for purchasing 3 packets. What a deal! Anyway after trying all 3, I thought the Black Sesame was the BEST, so much more aromatic than the original one. Hard to stop at one.

Besides honey comb cookies, Kee Heong does wedding biscuits, love letters, peanut biscuits and mooncakes too.

The sachima is definitely worth buying!
