Komeda’s Coffee: The Japanese Chain That Surprised Us

After our morning at the Toyota Commemorative Museum, we took a quick 5-minute walk over to AEON Mall Nagoya Noritake Garden. I really wanted to check out the Tsutaya Bookstore there — you know, the one with that magical optical-illusion wall of books that’s all over Instagram.

Once we were done admiring the viral book wall, we wandered around the mall, did a bit of shopping, and decided to take a breather at Komeda’s Coffee (コメダ珈琲店). Honestly, I’d been seeing this brand absolutely everywhere in Japan but had never stepped into one. Turns out it’s a Japanese coffeehouse chain with over 1,000 outlets across Japan, plus overseas branches in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Indonesia. And get this — it was actually founded right here in Nagoya! So yeah, we were standing in the birthplace of both Toyota AND Komeda’s Coffee. Haha, what a combo.

The Vibe at Komeda’s Coffee

We popped in late morning on a regular weekday, so the place wasn’t crowded at all. The moment we sat down, a staff member came over with hot towels and iced water. Such a nice touch, right? Definitely felt welcomed straight away.

I asked for an English menu and got one with zero issues.

How to Order

  • When you’re ready, just get the staff’s attention or press the service button on your table
  • They’ll take your order and bring the bill over to your table
  • When you’re done with your meal, just bring the bill to the counter to pay

The menu prices seem pretty value for money, and the whole place gives off no-frills family restaurant vibes. But honestly, I quite liked the atmosphere — maybe because it wasn’t crowded, so it felt really quiet and peaceful.

Plus, here’s the kicker for anyone who works on the go:

  • Power points at every table — charge all your devices
  • Free WiFi

Super work-friendly café. A student was doing her homework next to us, and another guy nearby was clearly grinding away on his laptop.

For the full menu, check out their official website. Do note that prices may differ depending on the outlet.

What We Ordered at Komeda’s Coffee

Honey Iced Coffee from Komeda's Coffee AEON Mall Nagoya Noritake Garden

Honey Iced Coffee

Mildly sweet with a decent honey flavour. It tasted a bit different from the honey I’m used to back home, but still really enjoyable.

Here’s the cute part — unlike other cafés that usually give you a cookie or biscuit on the side, Komeda’s serves a mini pack of peanut snacks. And surprise surprise, they were SO good. If they sold these in bigger bags, I’d probably grab a few to take home. Dangerously addictive, haha.

Premium Coffee Sophia from Komeda's Coffee AEON Mall Nagoya Noritake Garden

Premium Coffee Sophia

Robust, not too acidic. A really good brew if you like your coffee on the stronger side.

Gratin Croquette Burger from Komeda's Coffee AEON Mall Nagoya Noritake Garden

Gratin Croquette Burger

Okay, this one genuinely surprised us.

  • Looked way bigger than expected
  • Definitely value for money
  • Crispy croquette exterior
  • The filling streams out after your first bite, so grab a spoon to scoop it up
  • Very cheesy and creamy inside
  • Buns were pillowy and fresh
  • Shredded cabbage gave it a lovely crunch

A pretty darn good burger, much to our surprise!

Kuroneige from Komeda's Coffee AEON Mall Nagoya Noritake Garden

Kuroneige

This is chocolate Baumkuchen topped with soft-serve ice cream and a side of syrup. The soft-serve was smooth and milky — really lovely. Unfortunately, the Baumkuchen was a tad dry, so you really need to eat it with the ice cream. The syrup leans on the sweeter side too, so don’t be too quick to pour it all over.

Final Thoughts on Komeda’s Coffee

Honestly? I wasn’t expecting much from a local coffeehouse chain like this initially. But the overall experience really exceeded my expectations:

  • Aromatic, robust coffees
  • Reasonable prices
  • Excellent vibes
  • Good service
  • And that croquette burger was seriously good

This definitely won’t be the only time we step into Komeda’s Coffee. Already looking forward to the next visit!
